Tractor
1993 L3650
1993 Kubota L3650 4wd with the mechanical shuttle shift. The tractor has 800 hrs on it and works great. The only issue I’m having is the clutch doesn’t seem to want to fully disengage. When I push the pedal in, the tractor stops, but there still seems to be tension pushing the tractor forward. For example, going up a hill in forward, I push the clutch in. The tractor stops, but doesn’t roll back. If I shift the column into neutral, it then rolls back down. It’s almost if the clutch is still grabbing even though the pedal is depressed. It does this in forward or reverse. I’m also getting a little grinding going into gear, surely when cold.
Hopefully this doesn’t sound too confusing, but can anyone help? Thanks

Have you checked the clutch pedal free play yet? Hopefully it's just the adjustment and not the clutch itself.
Also if it has been sitting a while the clutch surfaces can have some rust/crud that can cause them to drag.

I did try adjusting the clutch, but it seemed pretty spot on according to the procedure.

Bump for any suggestions.

I would double check the adjustment first just to be sure, if it still checks out it could a pilot bearing starting to seize, but I doubt it if its able to hold a hill.

Does your model have a 2 stage clutch?

I’ll have to check on the two stage, but I’d imagine so. I don’t use the pto much at all.
The tractor itself quits stops early in the stroke, but something is still cause it to hold some sort of tension on the drive.

This may be more information than you want, but there are several possibilities here.

The L3650 w/mechanical shuttle has a 2-stage clutch, one disk for the drive wheels, another for the pto.

One cause for clutch drag is pedal linkage out of adjustment. Another is when the facings on the clutch disk are no longer flat but are curling and don't fully move out of contact with the pedal down. This is easy to check by adjusting the pedal for LESS free play. What we're doing here is seeing if more pressure plate travel stops the dragging. If so, the driving clutch disk is damaged, (but may run ok that way for a while).

The 2-stage clutch can be adjusted at the pedal linkage, but also inside between the disks. Does this machine have a front loader? Reason I ask is clutch work affects both disks - and access to the internal adjusters requires taking off part of the right side loader bracket. There's a related thread here on the Orange Tractor Talks site.

Other causes of clutch drag are warped pressure plate(s) - or those internal adjusters can also produce clutch drag if not set right. Try the easy thing first - then go from there. Take care, Dick B

Good info, do all L3650's have 2 stage clutches? The info I've seen says it was optional on the mechanical shuttle models.

I think on that model series there were three clutch setups. A single dry clutch was standard, or options were the dual dry clutch or a hydraulic wet clutch (Ever Clutch). The L3650 was the "later" model and by that time the single clutch wasn't offered. Maybe if somebody knows otherwise they'll chime in. As always, cheerful refund if info given by me is bogus :)

Thank you for your help. I’ll try these suggestions and report back.
