I'm considering an L3540 or an L3940 for food plot work including plowing with a 2 bottom 12" plow, discing , spreading and seeding. I'd like some input from folks on the machines I'm considering. Thanks!

I'm sure either will work fine. How many acres are you planting/working?

I have a 3240 HST and it is great on my 35 acres here. I opened up a new food plot last month that is about 2/3rds of an acre and just have to clean it a few more times of roots and then till it and plant.

I don't think it ever hurts to get as big of a tractor as you can afford. ;)

Go with the 3940. It will give you the larger 724 FEL. I think the 3540 uses the smaller 524 FEL.

I'll plow and plant about 5 acres. We have 78 acres and will use the tractor for various other things since the acreage is mostly woods and fields.
THANKS for your input!

Have you had your 3940 long?

Hey Barneyhunts...I've had the 3940 for about 2 years (201 hours). I LOVE this thing. I've done my fair share of beating on it and she keeps coming back for more. Not a single issue or problem so far.:D

Thanks folks! Tractor hunting is almost as much fun as food plotting.:)

Be careful of the documentation. I bought the 3540 only because sales brochure said the height with ROPs would fit in my shop. The owner manual had a different height which was about the same as the 3940. The owner manual is correct..... I would have spent the extra $.

I may be late to this party but a 3240 can be had with a 724 loader. that being said, if I were you, I'd go with the 3940.
I pull the pictured 2 bottom plow and I feel that I pull it well but I would like to have a bit more power. I would NOT trade for a 3540. Not enough difference in power, only 3 HP.
My dealer here does not keep 3540's in stock because he has found that someone wanting more power moves further up the line ie 3940 or more.

good luck.

I started with a L3130 open station and currently have a L4240 HSTC,so anything in between should work fine. Two bottom plows, tiller and spring tooth harrow. The L3130 handled them well.I had to plow in 4WD with the L3130 but it worked fine.
