Hi
I've develped a leak on the front axle of my L35 (see red arrows) and I was wondering how easy it is to remove the whole bevel gear case so I can send it off to have the seals replaced. Does anyone know if it is just a case of undoing the 4 bolts (blue arrows), detaching the steering link and pulling the whole thing out ? or is it more complex? any help would be appreciated

Chris

Hi Chris,

You must be 100% sure that the leakage is coming from the seal, the reason I'm saying this is beacause mine has a leakage but it came from the bevel housing that has a hair line crack not the seal.

The seal is a big o-ring, no big deal. The problem on the axle design is there is no rubber boot skirting or cast lip to prevent dirt and such from getting between the mating surfaces. The dirt eats-up the o-ring. We did my whole axle because my cast housing cracked,& my seals were starting to leak, but I think it's just the 4-bolts like you said and the end comes off the axle shaft ( there
is also an o-ring at that mating point ). FYI..when reassembling place a bead of grease around the problem area. That will fill the void so dirt can't accumulate so easily.
