I was really liking the 3400 but have not found one locally. The 3800 is readily available.

Why would you not want an L3800? it is just the newer model. The L3400 is no longer made, The L3800 has a few improvements and like the L3700SU special package it does not come with cruise control, standard like the L3400 had, and I am not sure about the fixed drawbar. Both items are worth having, and you should get the dealer to install them as a part of your deal. While you are at it, the optional rear remote would be nice. At one time I thought the L3800's loader was about 100 lbs stronger, but now I am not so sure, I think it is the same, just rated in a different way. The L3800 has the same jerky 3pt hitch as did the L2800 L3400 and now the L3200 and L3800 with few exceptions. But overall they are good strong tractors. I put several hours on mine today pushing over and digging up trees. (4 to 6 in. cedars)

I was the same way when they first came out with the new look. It took a bit of looking at them before it started to grow on me and now my MX5100 looks mighty fine. I did however get the dealer to throw in the brush guard which I think helps the look a bit.

Now I happen to like the new look better so if you show it to me I would be impressed wth the L3800. I think that other than trying the 3pt to see what that is about, I would take the L3800, and never look back. Once you have had it a bit, the L3400 will start to look more dated to you as another member mentioned. It was the same thing when I bought my new style B.

I originally had ordered a L3400 from Barlows.
About a week out from delivery Brady Barlow emailed me, he couldn't locate an available backhoe sub frame for the 3400, so he said he would have to upgrade me to the L3800 for the same price. I couldn't argue with that kind of deal.
I did have to pay for the cruise control since it's not standard equipment on the L3800. The L3800 comes with the LA 524 loader & BH 77 back hoe, the L3400 comes with the LA 463 loader & BH 76 backhoe not too much difference in the loaders. The BH77 is the curved boom model.
Initially I preferred the more boxy look of the L3400 hood. But after using the L3800 for front loader work the sloped hood offers greater visibility. Try and get the telescoping check chains as part of the deal. They are well worth the money even if you have to pay for them.

I'm pretty sure he means telescoping lower links vs. the turnbuckle style. The former makes it a lot easier to change implements vs. the latter. A lot of guys with the turnbuckle style have retrofitted w/ telescoping links. I did with my 7610 and it makes liofe a lot easier.
