Oil & Fuel L3400 Diesel Noise

O.K., I'm ot sure if I have a problem or if I am just paranoid. I have an L3400 that I bought new and it has 95 hours on it. The diesel engine always seemed to have a loud tapping sound, but I just assumed that was the typical diesel engine sound.

I borrowed a friends JD 790 to use his aeravator, and it seemed to run much quieter... almost purred!! Now I get back on my L3400 and it sounds MUCH louder than I remember it being. Is this normal? Would a cetane booster help? Any ideas?

I would start there. Every engine has sounds that are unique to the design of it. Not knowing what you are hearing or concerned about I'd go to a dealers lot and ask if you could here one run.

Now you know, GREEN IS MEAN and orange is a rattle bucket . Take it easy just a joke..You might check your valve lash but with those low hours I would be surprised if they were out. Does your tractor have full side panels that cover the engine? That could make a diff. in the noise.

Hard to tell without hearing it. Not all diesels sound the same though.

My L3400HST is fairly quiet but at idle with the clutch engaged there is a rattle that come from the hydrostatic drive.

My 1910 is very loud. It really rattles and always has.

My little JD 748 sounds more like a gas engine than diesel.

Why not go to a dealer and have him run a new L3400 and see it yours sounds noticable louder.

I dunno - last week I test drove a brand new L3400 and it purred like a kitten - no tapping. You might want to have it checked out to be on the safe side.

My L3400 taps a little at the first time I start it up during the day. It only lasts about 5 to 10 secs though. Could be just that the oil is all down in the pan and hasn't circulated up through the motor yet.
