Leejohn,
Where were you able to find them aftermarket? I haven't done a search for them because I only use 2 sets a year so I haven't worried much about the price. I was going to take them into the local mower shop and see if I could get a close match for them that I could modify. I have to take them off Monday and sharpen so I might take them down then and see what I can find and let you know. I do know that they are very thick blades 5/16 in thick. They are thicker than any commercial lawn mower blade. Most of them are 1/4 in.
Builder,
I cut Bahia pasture grass that is a 12-14 in tall all the time but don't go any taller than that. The seed stalks might be two feet tall but that's not the thick part of the grass. I usually set the height of cut at 4 inches. You might see if you can demo one for a little bit to see if it would work. The one thing I did to help mine cut was to cut a 1/2in off the leading edge of the mower deck to allow the grass to stand up taller when entering the mower. Now the blade tips are just slightly lower than the front edge of the deck. It cuts so much easier now and gives a better finish.
