Tractor
Kubota L2800HST
Was disking my neighbors small garden plot. I always plow and disk for them each spring. Was just about finished and my tractor just died. Couldn't get it to start back. The fuel seemed a little watery, so I drain the filter and tank. Then ran to the store and bought fresh diesel. No dice, still wouldn't start back. Now battery is almost dead. Don't know what else to do. Just doesn't seem to want to fire up. Guess I'll be calling my dealer in the morning! Hopefully they will do a field service, if not then the rollback and pick up and delivery charges.
Anything else I need to be looking for?

The first thing to check is the fuses and fuel shut off solenoid. Without power to the solenoid it shuts off the fuel flow.

The basics, battery, fuel, compression, timing.

Battery: alternator, fuses, relays, wiring, etc.. Does it cranks fast? Does it have 12.3 to 13.5 volts? (should be about 12.7+/-)
Fuel: shut off solenoid, Injectors, injector pump, filter, fuel quality, etc.
Compression: see what the specs are if needed. (you'd need the right tools)
Timing: (most likely you'd need the dealer for that.) Not likely the problem unless high hours, defective pump, or abuse.

The individual points are more involved but those are the major things.

The tractor was running fine when I first started working. Has been running great all the time before. I use it a little about every week. Had water in the fuel one time a long time ago and it kept stalling. That is what made me think of putting fresh fuel in, just in case. It has about 170 hours on it. I jarred it pretty hard in a rut and it just died, like it ran out of fuel. Wouldn't start back. Then I drained all the fuel and refilled with fresh. Still wouldn't start. Acted like it was out of fuel, just wouldn't fire. Could it have lost prime? I'll check the fuses in the morning. After that, my mechanical abilities are limited....
To get it back to my yard, can I tow it with another tractor? Put in neutral and hook up to the loader somehow? Hate leaving it sitting in his garden. Would be hard for a rollback to get to where it is at.
Any suggestions?

Well, after all that, its probably just got air in the fuel system somewheres, follow your book as to how to purge air,or do a search on here.

Hook up a jump pack so you've got plenty of juice to turn over. Loosen the hard fuel lines at the head and and spin the motor over to see if you are getting fuel to the motor.

Sounds like when you jarred the tractor somehow the fuel flow may have stopped, maybe a selenoid shut, maybe the wire to it came loose. Not sure on your machine but thinking the fuel cut off valve needs power to it to remain open.

Sorry I don't know a whole lot about your machine.

Is it possible when you jarred it a kill switch came loose or was engaged?

I would check to see if you are getting fuel to the motor.

Good luck,
Joel

Once I abruptly hit a tree with my fel while moving up a trail and it went dead and wouldn't start. It turned out that the sudden stop had slightly moved the pto lever and made the safety switch.

I would check all the safety switches. I've had the one under the seat of my B7800 jump out of position causing my tractor to cut out and not start.

With the safety switches,I beleive if they aren't engaged it won't turn over at all....I checked them visually, everything seemed normal. I drained the fuel tank, drained the fuel filter, and drained the hose going to the carb, the only other hose was attached with a clamp with a screw instead of the normal pinch clamp, so I left it alone. I'll check the fuses in the morning and I'll look at the manual on how to purge the air. Might need to hook the battery up to my Jeep to make sure it has enough power to keep turning over. I think the rough bump did have something to do with it, the fuel in it was fresh, I know you can get bad fuel though...and it has rained alot around here with it sitting outside, but no problems before now. So, I will look for something that may have jarred loose, check fuses, recheck safety switches, etc. and repost after that.
What about the towing, will putting it in neutral and trying to tow it 700 yards hurt it?
Thanks for the suggestions.

One other thing to check. Do you have a fuel water separator?

I have one that is part of the fuel filter. I did an oil change a couple of weeks ago, and said I really ought to check this thing, even though I "knew" there was no water in the fuel. Open the petcock on the bottom and out comes 6-8 oz of water.

I know that just a little bit more in there and it would have stopped the engine cold.

I don't think anybody said to change the fuel filter. The filter on my BX2350 started to plug up at 100 hours, and I'm really carefull with my fuel.
