Yeah that all sounds OK I think. It was all so covered in oil it was hard to tell.
Maybe I have something else to fix too?
There is the big round guts of the motor, and at the back end there is a smaller round thing. That thing has copper all over it and the copper was very pitted and worn.
He scraped some off to see if he could fix it but said no, it is stuffed.
Does that explain it?

It sounds like you're talking about the commutator. You need to fix the oil leak, that'll take out a starter every time.
