As have many others, I had a fuel gelling issue this weekend. In trying to get it going again, I elected to jump the battery with my venerable Saab. Trying to reach down behind the grill to get to the battery terminals was an absolute bear though. I must be missing something. Do you need to take the whole front end off, head lights and all, just to get to the battery? Seems kinda dumb. Advice welcome.

There's a release lever in the front of the tractor... passenger side, near the bottom. Just give it a pull. If it doesn't pop right up, it's probably frozen from moisture/ice. Just press up against the grill while holding the lever out.

Thank you, Sir! I've never seen it, but will look in the morning. I Thought I'd scoured the workshop manual too for a clue, with no success.

I'm not aware of a lever on my L4740 and was thinking the Grand L40's are all the same. I could be mistaken, but if there is no lever you'll want to consult the attachment.

Basically remove two wing screws and lift up on the grill as there are two pins on the bottom mounted in rubber isolators.

The attachment is from the Grand L40 Operator Manual (L3540 thru L5740).

Good luck.

Thanks very much. My tractor has regular hex bolts where that manual shows wing bolts. I'll try removing them and see if the whole assembly lifts up as the manual shows. If so, I'll replace the bolts with wing bolts. It'd make it somewhat easier to get at. Of course, a brand new battery, with a maintainer would mean I'd probably never use them. Thanks for the input.

Moship got it right. On mine I can remove the wing bolts and just tip the grille assembly forward which gives enough access to get to the battery.
