Kubota L3400
Hey guys. I'm smart and relatively mechanically inclined, but I don't have a lot of experience with diesel or tractors, much less diesel tractors. Nonetheless, I'm the man of the farm, so this repair falls on me.

I was bush hogging up against the tree line yesterday in my Kubota L3400. The RPMs stuttered; I tried to adjust the throttle, but it died nonetheless. Tried starting it back up; turned over but died quickly -- as in within a second or two. It just kinda cranked but never got loud like the pistons were firing. It kinda farted and died. The solenoid is making a weird intermittent clicking sound now when I try to start it up. I sprayed starter fluid in the air intake -- the filter is pristine. The fuel filter is a little dirty, but doesn't look cripplingly so.

While poking around under the hood, I discovered a piece of mangled hose hanging off a... thing. It's adjacent to the electrical hookup for what I *think* is the solenoid. I have taken pictures. It's like a plug; it has a little piece of cotton inside it. I'm thinking this is part of my fuel intake and it probably got mangled by a branch. I can't figure out where it would attach to even if I had the complete hose, though.

Do you guys mind checking out my pictures and telling me 1) what the heck I'm looking at, 2) if I'm missing a hose and, if so, 3) what part do I need to order and 4) where should it attach to?

Thanks so much.

Pictures: We're looking down into the engine bay from the right side of the tractor. The closer pictures are a zoom of the outside angle. The closest picture shows the plug on the left (which has a little cotton plug and which had a rubber hose coming off of it that was broken off at about 3") , adjacent to an electrical wire that comes in on the right.

First, never use starting fluid in a diesel.

Don't know what you're trying to point out in your pictures, maybe circle what you're talking about.

Definitely seems like a fuel issue. Add diesel even if there some in the tank. Make sure there's flow through the fuel system, start at the filter, then the lift pump, then injection pump, then injectors. Sounds like an obstruction or bad lift pump.
