Had a starter for a Subaru with the same problem... contacts worn in the center... solenoid was engaging, but not passing power... no rebuild kit available, replacement starter was $175?!?... I really needed some copper bar stock, but I was in a pinch, so I took a piece of 1/2 water pipe, flattened it in a vise, then sawed and drilled and bent two pieces to replace both contacts on the starter... I thought because the pipe was not as conductive as bar stock, and because it was two thin pieces squished together, that it would be a temporary fix but here we are two years later, and it's still working! (Hope I'm not jinxing myself!)
