Kubota L1500
Just wanted to hopefully save fellow members a little misery in the future. I believe the lack of proper lubrication resulted in the failure of the gear box. I do have one question. When I took gear box/shaft to the Kubota dealer he asked me if this was from a L1500. I told him yes. He was helpful but hesistant. I asked him about lubricating the cavity under gear box/shaft. He said it was an open air cavity. I asked him if I could spray WD40 in the cavity, he said it should not hurt. Any advice?

Well that sucks. :(

So the area pictured runs completly dry?

I doubt WD40 will do much good since it evaporates so fast. You may want to look for a oil or spray lube that has a little more viscosity and tackafier additives. Something like Drumand's Prizim lube would probably work great for this. Either that or a tacky R&O or overhead oil.

How much lubricant should I put in the cavity?

Thnx,

I'm not talking about filling it unless you think that's possible. Not familiar with the tractor. Is it a sealed cavity? If you added oil to it would it leak out? Is there anything in there that should not have oil on it?

I'm just thinking about using a very tacky type lubricant that will stick to the parts that are wearing.

I cannot answer your questions being the novice that I am. Looking at the pictures I can see rust in the cavity. This can't be a good thing. I will take your advice and spray with a tacky lubricant.

Thanx for the advice.

I'm going to try and upload this diagram. Looking at the pictures I took and the diagram, would this area be the clutch housing? If it is what lubricant do I need to use and how much? I did not see a drain plug under this area.

Thnx.

From the photos it looks to me like the clutch housing.
It is supposed to be dry. For some reason you are getting a lot of mosture in there causing higher than normal rust.
If you spray anything in that area to stop/slow the rust, be carefull not to get any oils on the pressure plate and clutch

That is the clutch housing and it is suposed to be dry. Their should be a weep hole in the bottom of this housing to drain water from washing, rain and condensation keeping it dry. From the pictures yours has had a let water in it. Check under the housing and look for a cotter pin sticking out and wiggle it around. Make sure the hole is open.

Maybe even make the hole a little larger by drilling it out. June bug down here will stop up a 1/2" hole.
