Where does your temp gauge run on your BX1850....mine runs above halfway, and when I am cutting and doing some heavy work, or just extended time stuff it gets close to the red, but never gets in it.....I brought it in to the dealer and they replaced the control panel and the sending unit I think.....he compared it with a 2350 on the lot and at 2400 rpm's just sitting there for a while it got up to above halfway....just doesn't seem normal to me though.

Thanks!

Jimmy

That doesn't seem right, it sounds like it's running to hot.

The only time my BX23 goes above halfway is when the radiator screen gets clogged up w/clippings.

During the winter mine never reaches halfway.

If he's already changed out the dash & sender then it could be the brand new thermostat is defective.

Perhaps someone else w/an 18hp BX will respond but I don't think this is normal.

Jimmy,

Are you saying that the temperature still reads high after the dealer replaced the control panel and sending unit? Did they make the same comparison after the changes were made?

I have a BX1850. They use a different gauge system than the early BX. Mine runs about half here in Michigan but the engine temp is not over 180°. The issue is to measure the temp, not to assume the gauge position is right. My old BX barely got into the green band and the engine was always over 165°.

I have an older model BX but the gage on mine runs very low in the normal range.

Has anyone looked at the thermostat as being defective maybe? The only way to know for sure is to take the t-stat out and run without one. If it's still running high I'd be worried something else is plugged.

Hopefully someone might have a better explenation for this than I have.

I think Kubota temperature gauges often do not work as well as we would like. On my BX2230 the temperature gauge barely moves. I have measured the resistance of the sender unit and it indicates that the engine temperature is very close to what normal operatng temperature should be yet the temp gauge says that it is barely above cold. There is a test that is described in the shop manual where you disconnect the temp gauge from the sender unit and measure the voltage on the wire that goes to the sender unit. It is supposed to be 12 Volts, but I measure 7 Volts. I talked to the dealer about this and he said as long as the gauge moves as the engine warms up everything is OK. This is hard to understand how this could be OK because it seems that if my engine ever did overheat the temperature gauge could still indicate a temperature that was well within what is indicated as normal engine temperature. I have seen several discussions about temperature gauge readings on this board. Most of them are about people whose gauges tend to read low, which is different from what you are experiencing.

If you have an Ohm meter it might be beneficial to to read the sender resistance when the engine is cold and when it is up at operating temperature. Here are the thermistor resistance values for the BS2230. Yours may or may not be different but here they are:

Deg F resistance
248 16.1
212 27.4
176 51.9
122 153.9

Its too bad they don't give a value for 75 degrees F.

I have an 1850 and my temp runs about halfway, it has never approached the red... good luck... how do you like your tractor? i love mine, / it is perfect for my yard, plus it makes my neighbor Orange with envy ( he has a JD lawn tractor)
