Hey guys

Welded up my from bumper on my L39 TLB for a winch. just got my hands on a champion 10,000 lb winch and a receiver mount. Just realized my alternator is only 40amp and the winch requires a 60amp alternator. Is this going to be a big problem? Cold cranking amp are fine 550 amps on my battery. Can i get a heavier alternator?

Any Feedback would be appreciated.

I think the cabbed tractors have a 60A alt. See if you can source one of those. I would assume it will fit, but that will be the big question, of course.

Kubota sells upgrades to the electrical system. I would think you shouldn't run a 60 amp accessory with a 40 amp alternator. Sounds like it could be trouble.

Your starter is over 100 amp.... you will not have any trouble running your starter UNTIL your battery runs down... the alternator is there to recharge the battery, so the load on the battery will only exceed the system when the amp hour output of that battery is exceeded.

Here's my "feedback"....:)
It all depends what you'll be doing with your winch. Running the winch for long periods of time will put a strain on your 40amp alt AND your 550amp battery.
They sell larger output alts and batteries for just this very reason.
IF your going to use this winch often then I would upgrade your alt and battery.

Does an L39 have a bumper? Front or back?

When you run the winch motor under load it pulls amps just like cranking the starter. Depending on the winch motor and how much load, it could be drawing 100 or more amps from the battery circuit, more than either a 40 or 60 amp alternator will supply. So the battery will eventually run down if the winch runs long enough. Obviously with a 60 amp alternator the battery drains slower and will recharge quicker. Going for higher capacity alternators can be costly... a high cap Kubota alternator especially.

A suggestion: wire up a second battery in paraĺlel with the one in the tractor. That gives you double the cranking amps at the same 12 volts and you should be able to run the winch for quite a bit longer, probably well into the duty-cycle limits of the winch itself before you'd need to take a break. I'd make it a temporary setup if possible so the second battery isn't permanently on the tractor, or even using two batteries entirely separate from the tractor electrical system for the winch. Multiple batteries like this are common on heavy equipment and class 8 trucks.

Under a heavy load - that 10,000 lb winch will draw more like 700-900 amps. No battery or alternator - in this world - can keep up with that. The best you can do is have a dual battery system and operate the winch within its duty cycle limits. Example - operate at a load of 4000 lbs for five minuets and then rest and recharge the battery for fifteen minuets. This rest time also allows hot parts and wiring to cool down somewhat.

Be VERY aware of hot alternators, hot wiring, hot winch motors - the transfer of this much electric energy WILL heat things up in a hurry.

Amen to that! Electric winches are great devices for intermittent use.

Thank you guys for all the input!! The winch is for intermittent use. I have a very hilly property (in Parry Sound) which has tested my ability every time i venture out. On top of that last summer was so wet it seemed like i was stuck all the time! I want the winch for back up and pray for drier summer….

Saying that I plan to keep working on my food plots lane way etc….. wife's garden projects etc. She thinks i am crazy spending 10-12 hours a day on a backhoe?????? i don't get that??

cheers Mark
