My 6040 has recently developed a loud engine whine (high pitched) when under load or higher RPM's. Tractor has low hours but is about ten years old. Engine bearing ?

I doubt that it is an engine bearing. An engine bearing would be more likely to make noise under no load and/or low RPMs.
What you are describing is typical of one of the rotating parts that are exterior to the engine. These are things like the water pump, the alternator, the fanbelt idler bearing, or the turbocharger which was standard on that model tractor. You need to listen to each of them to see which is the culprit - or ask any mechanic; we do this all the time. All of these parts are external, they are relatively cheap and easy to repair - nothing anywhere near as troublesome as an internal engine bearing.

Perhaps something as simple(?) as an air intake issue? High RPMs the engine is pumping a LOT of air. If this engine had a turbo I'd also consider checking for a boost leak: air being pushed out. Think of blowing air across a reed.
If you can run the engine w/o the accessory belt then take it off and run it (briefly). That would rule/in anything in that pathway.

If it does it when not under load, then it really shouldn’t be the turbo. You shouldn’t be able to build enough boost just revving the engine to make a pressure side leak enough to hear it.

Thanks to all for the replies. I'll check out the Turbo Charger and other good suggestions. Sorry for not replying sooner but on a farm the internet is a fickle visitor.
