Kohler CV14s in line resistor ???

my father accidentally hooked up the battery on his rider backwards. a wire started smoking. once I diagnosed it a bit and cut back the shielding on it I saw there is a SMALL in line fuse on the module wiring. I can't tell what the resistenace is to replace it. I know any mower shop will tell us I have to replace the entire Module assembly. can anyone tell me what resistance that is? thanks , crossy

Most likely it is a diode, and not a resistor. Should be able to replace the wire, not the module.

your right , it did look more like a diode. If I remember correctly a diode is like an electrical check valve(one way). anyway I just had the engine running for a second without it even though the wire is in two pieces. so what DID that little booger do? . thanx ,crossy

The idea behind it is to help prevent electrical spikes damaging the ignition module, like for people that have electric clutches, the clutch acts like a generator when you turn it off, and it is coming to a stop.

The bigger Kohlers have DSAI ignition module, that use 12v to power than like the old type coils. The now require clamping diodes between the leads of the clutch to prevent electric feedback spikes from destroying the modules.

On the EFI engines, there has been causes where turning off the electric clutch would roast the ECU. Even heard of one case where the tech had his laptop connected to the engine doing diagnostics, and when they turned the clutch off, fried the ECU and the guys laptop computer.
