Kohler Courage got me stumped

Could you spin the engine at a normal starting speed or was the starter still struggling? From the looks of it there is a weighted lever mounted to the camshaft gear (I think both but not sure). It looks like when the gear is spinning slower during start up the lever will hold the valve open slightly to reduce compression. The lever I think is metal but the gear isn't. It looks like the plastic gear is breaking and the lever falls off disabling the ACR. From the looks of it the gear may not be too hard to replace. You need to remove the flywheel and the upper engine case to access the gear.

I think I'll be doing the same to mine this summer. With snow on the ground I don't have to worry about mowing for a few months.

Hey Al, just a mention. A few years ago we visited your beautiful state and while there stopped in Shelbyville [?] and visited the round barn museum. A highlight of the trip and for that matter, my life. Thought we would spend an hour or so and darn near spent the whole day. I remember telling the lady volunteers that their museum was older than the state of Oklahoma. Love your state, IN THE SUMMER. Thanks for all the help. Joe
