Kohler 7000 Series engines- are they considered a yay or nay yet for residential mowers? Someone asked me about one in a Husqvarna, and I told them I haven't heard anything in regards to these engines yet. I told them my new JD has the Briggs Intek twin that has been around for a long time and is considered to be generally reliable. I take it the Kohler 7000 was made to replace the Courage line, which developed a poor reputation for reliability. Is the 7000 considerably better?

The Courage twin which was replaced by the 7000 series was a fairly reliable engine with few issues. Early 7000 series engines has a few bugs but appears to be worked out. The courage single (bucket engine) was the problem child engine which has now been replaced with a similar block with totally different internal guts called the 5400 series. My understanding the 5400 has had a few growing pains but nothing like the cracked blocks and broken counterweight issues of the courage single.
