I was getting some Cub Scout supplies in the Sacramento store/office. They have a wonderful book on knots for a mere 80 cents.
The book show a number of knots and hitches; clove hitch, diamond hitch, sheepshank, figure eight, just to name a few. It shows how to whip the end of the rope to prevent fraying. It even shows how to make rope!
