Not really, an alternator SHOULD charge between 13-14 VDC. A battery at 12.5 volts is about 90%.
on generators, which I service, the chargers will charge a battery to 14 volts, then charger shuts off until battery gets to 12.8 volts or so than the charger kicks back on.
my Kioti shows about 13VDC while operating. Battery is 6 years old.
Having your alternator fail can leave you stranded on the side of the road. Though it is not necessary to know every aspect as to how the alternator works, knowing a few easy tests and some initial signs of failure can keep you...

EDIT: I just reread the post. What do you mean when you turn the switch off? I originally thought you ment you turned off or on the lights, or another load. How can you turn the key switch off and engine still runs?
