Guys if you had a tractor with less than 20 hours and it had a failure of the clutch system and the tractor had to be split and a lengthy repair, would you say the unit lost value once out back together?

Who would know besides you and the dealer? If it's fixed properly and gives no more problems I don't see why it would be an issue down the road if you decided to get rid of it. I'd be a little ticked that it failed in 20 hours though.

Not at all, IMO, once repaired. That assumes, of course, that the repair was done correctly and completely. I read your question to imply so.

The length of time it takes to complete the repair wouldn't affect market value of the tractor. Your blood pressure and patience as the owner is another matter! :)

Sorry that this happened to you. How long it did take, BTW? Was there any difficulty in having this honored as a warranty matter?

Welcome to TBN!

One tractor with 20 hours on it, factory sealed. Another, also with 20 hours, had to be split and repaired. Same asking price, which would you pick? I'm leaning towards thinking it does matter. But I do think your tractors perceived value restores itself as you diesel further away from the split hour count, if having no further issues.

So right after this repair I think yes, there is a lost value. But after a few hundred hours, I think this value is restored.

BTW, Nancy - welcome to TBN and the forum. JMHO - if the question of value has to be asked - then the owner of the tractor probably does see value lost. And - as xcgreene - so aptly explains - I think others would also see value lost.

If an owner has to wait hundreds of hours to see value restored - - that, in and of itself, is a loss of value.

If you are looking for a specific answer - go to a tractor dealership and present the situation - ask how this might affect the selling price, trade in value, etc.

Clutch system failure??
clutch disc fail, pressure plate, linkage, adjustment? or operator?
I can see the owner being nervous about another failure, don't see it effecting the value down the road unless it happens again.

I don't see how it would affect value (in terms of resale/trade) once repaired. Not like there's a carfax report for used tractors and after the repair it's either right or it is still broken. If it were your car instead of your tractor and it had to undergo an extensive repair from a mechanical failure that wouldn't be grounds for a diminished value claim from your insurance company so I'd look at the tractor that same way.

It would however affect my perceived value as the owner - would be hard to shake that feeling of "I got a lemon", "I should have bought that other one instead", or "what next?". For me, that would take some time to get over.

Repairs generally dont effect value, damage does.

If you tried to sell it immediately following the repair, it is possibly a savvy buyer may pass, but you will sell it for the going rate to someone.

As mentioned, the further away from the repair you get the less likely even a savvy buyer would care.

And this only matters if you mistakenly bought the wrong tractor and need to upgrade.

Otherwise just work that thing and put this out of your mind.

If the repair work is warrantied then I'd think it all moot (assumes, that is, that the warranty can be carried over to a new owner). That said, knowing what I now know of my dealer I'd be less interested in buying anything that they'd worked on.
