Kioti DK40SE
The alternator on my DK40SE (2008) died so I tried to find parts to repair the alternator. Only thing I found was a new alternator from eBay for $250.00. I understand that the same alternator is used on many DK and CK series tractors (Valeo TA000A58101) so I like to share what I found for a substitute!

My experience with alternators has been that most of the time it痴 the voltage regulator that has gone bad. After watching a guy replace my voltage regulator years ago, it痴 really a simple job that only requires basic soldering skills. Over the years, I have revived many alternators by simply replacing the regulator. In my search for a substitute alternator for the tractor, I wanted one with parts that were available and reasonably priced.

With that said, here is the alternator I found that is almost a direct replacement. It痴 built by Mitsubishi and made for a 1983 Mazda B2000 truck ($58.00 at OReilly痴 Auto Parts). This alternator uses the same wiring plug as the Kioti and uses the original Kioti mounting bolts to install on the tractor and the best thing is, it has the same offset from the pulley so the mounts do not need altering!

However, there are some differences with the Mitsubishi alternator. The Mitsubishi alternator has an external fan and the Valeo has an internal fan (older model alternators were typically designed with an external fan). The Mitsubishi mounting holes are about a ス taller than the Valeo and require loosening the top mount bolt on the engine block to raise the top alternator bracket to allow for the taller bolt pattern. The Mitsubishi alternator also has a wider lower mount that requires shimming with 8 x 3/8 washers and the overall diameter of the alternator is a bit bigger that makes installing the belt a knuckle buster. The Valeo pulley needs to be installed on the Mitsubishi alternator, it痴 a bit smaller and saves having to purchase a longer belt. Actually, the smaller Valeo pulley should be used because the diesel engine runs at a lower RPM as compared to the gasoline engine on the Mazda!

If you are familiar with the Lester cross reference guide for alternators, this is a Lester 14307. The alternator fits several models of Mazda from the early 1980痴. The replacement voltage regulator runs about $30.00 and a set of brushes are $8.00. Next time I have problems with this alternator, it will be a cheap repair!

A couple of installation suggestion! I found that it was easier to set the belt in the alternator pulley before bolting the alternator to the mounts. To properly align the new alternator pulley, be sure to install the OEM bolt shim in front of the lower mount. The 2 wire plug on the back of the alternator is correctly wired for the Kioti and the Kioti plug will plug right in. While you have the plug off, check for corrosion. My original alternator died due to corrosion in this plug (the sensor wire could not read battery voltage correctly). This caused the alternator to continuously overcharge the battery and eventually killing the alternator!

The pictures attached show the original Valeo alternator, the replacement Mitsubishi alternator and the performance chart for the Mitsubishi alternator. Note that the performance at 2400 RPM痴 is 47 amps. The Valeo pulley is about シ smaller so the alternator will spin a little faster and should be producing about 50 amps at 2600 RPM痴.

Thank you for sharing your hard work and time. Makes for a good repair option. Will need to check and see if it works for the smaller CK30.

Is there a cross reference for alternators by mounting bracket dimensions? It would be nice the replace the weak generator on our B7500 with a small alternator (say 25-35 amp? Vs the current 10 amp generator).

Next time I pop the hood on my NX (it is very cold outside), I need to snap a photo of the plug to see if it is the same.

Sorry, I don't know of a cross reference for brackets. If your bracket looks similar to mine, that is typically a Mitsubishi style mount. Be aware if you increase the amperage over the OEM rating, you need to check the wire size between the alternator and battery to see if it can handle the increased load. If you have a fuse in line to the battery, the amperage of that fuse would be the limit. For example, my fuse size is a 60 amp so I am limited to a alternator under 60 amps at 2600RPMs engine speed (more RPMs equals more alternator output/amperage). Hope that helps!

I would like to find a onewire type alternator or one that just needs an exciter wire so that I could run a new charging lead to the battery and completely replace the existing system.

In my opinion, you do not need to limit yourself to single wire (plus the battery lead, don't want to confuse things!) alternators! On the 2 wire like I have on the DK, one wire supplies power to the alternator light on the dash and the other wire goes to the fuse box to sense battery load. If I were converting your tractor, I would just leave the connector for the lamp spade with no wire attached, and run a 18 gauge wire to the outlet side of a 10 amp fuse in the fuse box. You may already have the sensor wire to the fuse box, if so your ahead of the game. You get a better reading on battery load at the fuse box than at the battery or jumping the wire over to the output line on the alternator! One last thought, I did not find any alternators under 45 amps...you could use the 45 amp, but I'd change the alternator pulley to a larger diameter so it would reduce the RPM's/ output amperage. Look at the performance sheet in my original post and you can get an idea of amperage at a given RPM.

jbroxton thanks for the money saving recommendation! With mowing season coming up, I knew that the temporary workaround of short use and back to the battery charger wasn't going to "cut" it.

Saw your post and replaced the $450 OEM alternator on my DK45SC this weekend with the $50 B2000 alternator from O'reilly's.

Due to the position of the plug on the new alternator, I had to add a few inches to the alternator wiring harness. The new alternator is a tighter fit, so I also added a few inches to the air conditioning wiring harness that runs between the alternator and engine block to prevent it from rubbing.

The pulley on the replacement alternator was the same size as the OEM. Glad that it was because the pulley shafts were different sizes. Since the new alternator is a bit bulkier, I needed a fan belt 1" longer than the original. Installing the fan belt before placing the bottom mounting bolt is definitely the way to go.

The exhaust pipe is so close, I'm not certain how the original alternator lasted as long as it did. I plan to repair the OEM alternator and keep it on the shelf.

With the money saved, I see a hydraulic top link in the near future!

Thanks again!

Great to hear the Mazda alternator worked for you! Go ahead and reward yourself with a hydraulic top link.... You'll love it! Just added TnT, I do alot of blade work and it makes a huge difference!

I just put one in my CT235, it was a tight fit with the exhaust pipe. I had to add a jumper for the two wire plug as it fell right under the exhaust pipe and wouldn’t fit.
