Speaking of somber, the most awesome yet awkward experience that I have ever experienced was flying a mission on the evening of 9/11/2001 when I pretty much had the whole U.S. airspace to myself. Nobody out there. Altitude and route clearances was pretty much whatever I wanted. No traffic to be concerned with. Looking at the calm and empty skies over the U.S. after the events of the morning of 9/11 made me wonder where our nation was headed. Unfortunately, I'm still wondering.
