Keyless Start

I want to change my Yanmar Key Start to a Keyless Start.

I would need to have a way to still use the Thermostart System (glowplugs).

Any suggestions?

You would need two push switches . One you hold in to have the glow plugs then push the second to turn the starter.

A couple years ago there was a guy on Ebay selling custom programmed 3 relay remote boards. The remote had three buttons, key A was toggled on or off for the ignition, key B was momentary for glow plugs and C was also momentary for cranking.

Installed on RTV and would set every thing in neutral brakes set and preset heat control and be able to prestart in morning and having the cab warm up and dryed out.

Looks like they have some now with rolling code, programmable remotes and relay logic programming.

Hmm.

I'm sure someone else has thought of doing this before.

My main goal is I don't want to have to remember to always have the key with me.

The remote is interesting but how would I connect it to a old grey market yanmar tractor?

I'm just curious, but could you just leave the key in the ignition? If you would be worried about someone starting it with the key left in, couldn't anyone start it with the push button switches also? Or were you planning on hiding them from view?

Another way to solve the the problem of getting to the tractor and not having the key, is to use a magnetic key box somewhere on the tractor, like under the seat or under the hood.

You obviously arn't afraid of theft. So, why take the key with you at all? Just leave it in. Maybe hide another on the machine just in case. Why make another project?

Personally, I always remove the keys from equipment and put them somehwere convenient. No sense making things really easy for thieves. I could never understand why so much equipment uses universal keys.

I think it is strange too. Might have made sense years ago. Today I can buy a $14k car with a built-in security system and a remote with rolling codes and nearly pick-proof door and ignition locks, but a $50k (and more) dollar piece of equipment uses the same key as all the others. Seems it would be better to have unique keys (real keys) and the manufacturer to offer the option to have them keyed alike for those with more than one piece of equipment to worry about.

What about using a aftermarket remote start system designed for a diesel powered pickup? They can be wired to operate the glowplug circuit and can be pregrammed with the required delay. One thing you won't have is the interlocks with the transmission to ensure the tractor is not in gear and/or the brakes is set, but you could probably add some switches to give you this function.

The remote system I have on my RTV connects to the key switch and does ignition, glow and crank. Non of the interlocks are bypassed and I can glow the same as using the key.
