Hi Everyone
I have an L2550 and the key no longer shuts the tractor down. The fuel solenoid works when voltage is directly applied and the ignition switch itself seems to test okay with an ohms meter. Harness wires and plugs also seem to look fine. It starts fine with the key but no voltage gets to the solenoid in any key position. Should I just try a new ignition switch for $17 dollars at Amazon?

Is yours the type that Kubota has were the power is applied to shutdown the engine?

My old F2000 is of that type. It has a controller that applies voltage to the solenoid for a few seconds when the key is switched off to stop the engine, after it times out the solenoid is released to be ready to start again.

This is backwards to the more common energize to run solenoid. With it being energize to stop.

Yes there is a timer relay however it's too complicated for me in the wiring diagram and also the relay is discontinued according to the Kubota web site
It's such a good machine and a shame if parts are discontinued

There are 2 fuses involved in the shutdown. Have you checked the fuses? There's a WorkShop Manual which includes the schematic at www.KubotaBooks.com.

I'd bet you can match the relay to something at Digikey, etc. Get the number off the relay and search that.
Or just wire a switch to the solenoid to shut it down. Momentary push button would be my choice, hold until stopped then release. Not hard to spec and use a timer relay if you prefer.

Yes the 10 amp fuse to the far right was blown so we thought we fixed it but replacing that only fixed the guages lights. the other 3 fuses were good.

I've been using the manual fuel shut off to kill the engine but you have to remember to shut the key also to kill the gauge lights and everything else

Is the timer on the right front of the engine that looks like a mechanical voltage regulator with points?

It was difficult to find but is this the shutdown timer?

So it works in the old school manner but not with the key.
I was going to suggest a momentary push button to apply power to the solinoid to shut down the engine but that wouldn't help much in that case as you would still need to turn the key off.

However you could replace the controller with a simple off delay relay,

Awesome thanks so much that looks like it mounted right next to the regulator on my machine.

I can't seem to find the timer on the tractor. The only place I see anything similar looking is right, front by the regulator or on the firewall but neither has numbers on it like the Messicks numbers. Mine are both Nippondenso originals. For now I'll continue with the manual shut off.

You seeing the actual part number you can purchase many places at a fraction of the tractor parts number price. Not many relays, etc made for a specific application

I think that's where it's located.

The timer connector will have four wires,
Black - ground
Red - 12v always
Red w/white stripe - 12v in acc position
Black w/blue stripe - to stop solenoid

Have you performed this procedure from the WSM?

You guys are great.I see now that it is the unit on the firewall. it's facing down with a shrink tubing around the bottom of it where the connector plugs into it.

I had the same problem on my L2550. a close look at the fuse box showed that one of the brass connections on the fuse box had rusted away and the power to #30 on the relay had been attached to that. I don't think an ignition switch will fix the problem if your fuse box is like mine
Basically the system applies power to the solenoid on the F/I pump to shut off fuel and turns power off after the engine dies. The shut off timer relay turns power to the solenoid on for about 20 seconds when the key is turned to off, then shuts it off again. Check that the timer relay is getting a hot to the 30 terminal on the relay from the fuse box and make sure the relay works if you are not getting power to the solenoid on the pump at shut off.
On my own tractor, the fuse box was an expensive part and I used the manual shut off knob after the electric shut down stopped working. Has worked for 20 years. It is automatic now, turn key and pull shut off knob.
Be sure that you are looking at the right relay, as there is a timer/temperature control relay for the glow plugs, too. Check with your dealer parts guy to see what the correct relay looks like. And check all the wiring first before buying an expensive part you might not need. The relay usually is good and the problem is elsewhere, like my fuse box.
