I over did it and sheared off the dipper control rod on the Kelley b600. The problem is I can't figure out how to get the broken end of the rod out of the valve end. The broken end and the valve keep turning so I can't turn out the broken rod end. I took off the other end of the valve to expose the spring. There is a bolt head inside the spring. If I can keep it from turning I can turn out the broken rod on the other end. The spring covers the bolt head so I try to push a socket on it and it's basically useless. I can't even fit it well enough to determine if it's a 13mm, or 1/2 socket. I push the spring in with the socket to try and get it on the bolt head. It's useless. I don't have a small spring compressor. The clearance on the side of the bolt to the spring is really small. (Inside of the spring) A regular socket wall is too big to fit in there. I tried a thin wall impact socket but it was just a little too big to fit. I'm sure there is an easy way to do this, but I can't think of it. Any ideas?

First I would try an impact gun on the rod. Weld on a nut .

Often the impact forces will loosen a fastener when slow turning will not. This is using the rotation inertia of the valve spool to work in your favor.

Get a cheap socket of the size you are using on the spring bolt.

Grind down the walls of the socket until it will go into the hole to access the bolt head.

Kevin, so it appears you have broken off the end of the control valve spool? Yes No?

As long as the broken spool end is not bent or damaged sticking out it should slide out the back of the valve casting. If the spool damage scars up the inside housing it will be junk. But even if you get that spool out they usually don’t sell the spool separately as a replacement part, it is precision matched to the housing. So you’ll likely be doing some custom welding, machining (or grinding) to make it do.
