I'll put in another good word. When Dad gave me the saw, it was just the saw. No case, no manual, etc. I'm sure they're at his house somewhere but I don't know if he could find them. Anyway, I went to the Stihl website and not only do they have the owner's manuals online they will also send you a manual for free. The online version is a pretty poor Xerox looking copy in PDF format but the manual that they send you is the original, bound manual.

This might not seem like much but lots of companies treat their owner's manuals like some sort of trade secret treasure and make it hard or expensive to get a new one. Kudos to Stihl for making them readily available. And free!

my 039 starts like this

black on/off lever all the way down (choke) - Position 4
pull till it spudders
flick lever up one to full throttle lock on - Position 3
one pull usually has it fire right off let it run for a sec or 2 at full throttle
flick to "run" (which drops throttle to idle) - Position 2
let idle for a bit if cold (set chain brake)
else dive in!
.
.
.
To shut down flick lever up - Position 1

It seems like the basics principles are the same but the specifics are very different. On the 025 you pull the trigger and this moves the choke lever to run (this is the part that seems odd to me.). Also, you're not supposed to rev the 025 until you take the chain brake off. I doubt I will ever use the chain brake though.

Good Evenin George,
I have had my Stihl 025 for at least 10 years maybe more like 12 ! I also have the 029. They are really great saws ! I sharpen my saws by hand and have only gone through a few chains. Just a suggestion, buy yourself an extra filter element or maybe two. They can only be cleaned so many times IMO before they are loaded up with some real fine dust particles that cant readily be blown out with compressed air !

Good Luck and enjoy ! :)

BTW before owning my Stihl, I owned a Homelite Super XL forever, but it was abit on the heavy side ! ;)

Just bought a 50 plus dollar bar and chain for my 12 plus year old cheepo poulin, probably not worth 30 dollars,BUT,it runs, this is second bar and probably 10th 11th chain, cut brush,no fire wood, but have cut alota trees down with it.

My newest one is a echo, its been a very good saw, better made than cheapo poulin, but hasn't burned half as much gas yet.

Might buy either an echo or husky next time?

Don't think I'll ever buy a stihl. Why? cause everybody else wants one!

My 025 is 7.5 YO and still running just like the day I first bought it. It gets used every winter and sometimes in the summer.

I don't use the chain brake either.

I don't know when dad bought this particular Stihl, but I'd guess at least 10 years ago.

Mom told me that he went out and bought a new Echo. I wish she had not let him. He really doesn't need to be running a saw. But, she says he hasn't even taken it out of the case and he might not. I think that for a man like my Dad, even with Alzheimers, he just needs to know that he has a chain saw, even if he never uses it.:)

So, it looks like there is probably an Echo chainsaw in my future at some point too.

Thanks guys,

Since several of you have done the same thing for the same (good) reasons, you are making me feel a lot better about "taking" my dad's Echo 3450 away from him! At 83 with poor vision, poor leg strength/balance, and very poor saw maintenance habits, I figured he really shouldn't be using it. It took about $60 worth of parts to get it back in shape, but it's almost like new now. Echo is also great about online manuals and their online parts suppliers are great (but expensive).
