Noticed today that K&N has an air filter listed for the CK30 for about $38. Anyone have any thoughts about using an oil saturated filter on these tractors ?

I would NEVER use a K&N type filter on a tractor or machine that typically operates in very dusty environments.

I would think for the same price or maybe a few bucks more you could buy the recommended air filter from your dealer?Just a thought.coobie

If you let more air into any engine without increasing the output through the exhasust system you willl have accomplished absolutely nothing except demonstrate the placebo effect, car or tractor. In this case with a tractor in a dusty environment I would rather be hit in the teeth with a coat hanger than use a K&N on my equipment.

Not quite, the exhaust system is not always designed to be at it's maximum flow for that specific engine. That is to say that the engine is not utilizing the full extent of the exhaust's capabilities. On just about any vehicle made today, a K&N or other free flowing filter will increase HP due to the fact that the intake is always the first bottle neck.

With that said, adding air to a diesel engine does not make more power without adding fuel. An electronically monitored fuel injected vehicle will compensate with more fuel but the majority of diesel tractor engines will not. So it will most likely do nothing to your tractor but it is a lifetime cleanable filter that is much cheaper then buying replacements...

I looked for a K&N air filter before but couldnt find one. Now that I know one is available I will buy one quick. I have used these filters on my trucks for years and they work great. I dont think the "dust factor" is a big concern. The K&N beats the cheap paper filters any day of the week. You can save alot of money in the long run too.

Coobie, it's not a question of cost so much as whether the oil/cotton filter would filter better than the paper filter. K&N has a pretty good reputation, I wouldn't think they would get into agricultural without some confidence in their product. My Cub Cadet garden tractor has a foam pre-filter that is oil saturated and that filter has to catch 90% of the dirt before it gets to the paper element. Just trying to incite conversation among the troops :).

Not quite, as you said this depends on the choke point. If the engine is currently starved for air by the filter but has plenty of fuel under high load conditions then simply removing the filter (or installing a K&N, same thing) will allow enough air for complete combustion of the extra fuel which will create power. Just imagine a plugged up air filter and how this creates black smoke which is wasted power.

I would NOT use a K&N on my truck and especially not on my tractor.

What happened to the good ole days of a oil bath air filtration systems. I have those on a John Deere 730 Diesel and a 10" chipper. They have plenty of air flow and nothing gets through them. Just change with a quart of oil every 6 months to a year. There is a pretty good article here for those that are interested. Yesterday's Tractors - Oil Bath Air Filters
