Medical card, triangles, dot numbers, and machine is under 10k so two straps plus the back bucket. What am I missing? Dot pulls everybody over here. I do have farm tags and will get farm tags for trailer. I own 5 businesses and one is a farm. Sch f filed. This truck is my daily driver too. I know dot loves busting construction guys with farm tags. I pull buggies full of soy with this truck so I won't get new tags. Any suggestions? Oh, I have a plumbing business that requires me to haul this m59 around.

You were doing good until, "Oh, I have a plumbing business that requires me to haul this m59 around."

If you have five businesses, you should be able to have a vehicle for your plumbing and whatever and a dedicated farm truck.

Lol., everything but the farm biz is new residential housing. Soy pays a good part nowadays for me. Fire extinguisher thanks. I don't have 2 trucks other than a older f250 I retired. You get tags they ask: do you live on a farm, work on an a farm, or own a farm.. Yes to all. Never: do you work off of the farm? I do. Work my nuts into the ground. It's 9:00 and I am just feeding and watering, got held up late with a bad/ nasty sewer and wife us pissed cause I'm out so late!!!

Really starting to agree with 'don't tread on me'!!

Log book?

CDL?

What state are you in?

Do you travel/tow interstate?

"In Indiana, farmers may purchase a farm plate that costs significantly less than a commercial vehicle plate with the same declared gross weight. The lower priced farm plate can be purchased for a pickup truck, a trailer, or even a semitruck (tractor or trailer) as long as the unit is used solely for farm operations."

Copied from Indiana/DOT handbook.

Sounds like the semi can only be used for farm purposes then.

I think the key here is you are using the tractor for a business also, and its not related to anything with your farming. In other words its for profit and nothing to do with your farm. JHMO zman

Best thing is to call ur local DOT office and ask them to b on the safe side. Here in Tx farm tags are form farm related use only. Big ticket if cought doing anything not farm related but we don't need dot numbers cdls or lagbooks either.

I'm pretty sure the farm tags are going to have to go.
But I do know there is no cdl, log book here for under 26k.

things to have:

med card
fire extingusher
triangles
dot numbers
strapped correctly
and I think a truck/trailer inspection

I assume that is in-state use only that you are referring to ......

Once you cross state lines all bets are off on the log book aspect ..... ;)

Don't forget:

federal annual inspection
spare fuses

You won't need a log book but you will need either a post or pre trip inspection book.

Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) for truck and trailer total less than 26,000 ?

The truck and equipment is used to make money for hire or in the furtherence of business, in the other 4 business's you own I am guessing, really does not matter if its 4 or 1, therefore farm tags are useless if the vehicle is used otherwise.Farm use does not out weigh the commercial use in the states eyes, period. My suggestion would be lie like a politician at election time if you get caught going to a paying job instead the farm. It really depends on your home states definition of a commercial vehicle for intrastate commerce. For example, Texas is 26k(my home state) as long as I am under 26k in registration or actual weight...read registration weight here, this is where the DOT will get you...add truck gvw with trailer gvw, if thats over 26k, then you need txdot #'s, farm plates are at 54k if I remember correctly. Now if you cross state lines the threshold drops to 10k for commercial use.
Your commercial business use of the vehicles will outweigh the farm tags use, the burden of proof will be on you in court after the ticket is issued, really no way around that.

How do you explain this? The only way you dont need a log book and need a post trip, which is required by law, not a pre trip. is if you operate on the 100 mile air radius rule.Even then you are required to log time and out on a non grapgh log book that should match your time card.

I have a small farm in Texas and a farm truck but for the differance in price I have regular plates just not worth the hassel if the cop wonts to stop me.

I'll need to pull a second trailer just to carry all the stuff needed:D

But I did get my medical card. That's an instant $160 fine. Most everything else is a 30 day to fix warning.
