Just got back from the ER

This is driving me absoultly bull ****. I would like to engage in the conversation on a topic but any post I make I am not able to see it. If one responds to half dozen threads in a day it helps to be able to review what you said.
Is this happening to anyone else?
I know my posts are making it to the forums because I see replies to my posts.:mad::mad:

I've never heard of it before, sounds like your browser is not refreshing, maybe security settings ???

even my pruning Echo and that thing is designed for single handed use.

Joel

That can get a little hairy, did alot of that working from a 66ft boom lift this past summer. had rented the machine for a job and still had a week left on the monthly rent, so I had them move it to my yard. Trimmed ~30 trees some of them 80+ ft tall.

Alot of reaching and stretching with the pruning saw in one hand, that is an accident waiting to happen, you really have to pay attention. then add to that, another guy in the basket reaching in and over trying to pull cut branches out so they don't fall on undesired targets, like house, Glass sun room, the machine itself.

The construction boom lift was awesome, much more maneuverable than a regular tree workers bucket truck. did such a good job trimming the trees, there was hardly a stick to pick up in the yard after this long hard winter :)

Nobody's mentioned that little lever above your left hand.. the chain brake. I generally flip that thing to lock the chain when I'm moving, especially if I'm having to negotiate brush and vines to get to the next cut. Chaps and hard hat are worn too. I get made fun of for being safety man. Nobody is safe around me except me. LOL

Yea, I might be calling you too....

I have SO much use for one of those, or maybe a full bucket truck. Gotta get one.

They also have tow behinds that reach 50 feet, had one of those 2 years ago, also left over time from a job I had it for. Sunbelt Rental has them.

They are not as maneuverable as the 4x4 monsters, but cost alot less. I rigged mine to the tractor to make it as maneuverable as possible around the yard. They have large outriggers that self level the machine, so they can actually work on slopes, unlike the self propelled units that rely on counter weight and have to be pretty level.

JB4310; That is a nice unit for reaching up HIGH! Good job on the trees. I can see in the 4 picture that your wearing a safety belt, so you were thinking safety.

Note: OSHA requires a body harness for those types of man lifts.
Just my :2cents: worth! :D

Sorry Jayc i got the wrong poster, it was JB4310 in the picture.

I have a trailer-able boom lift. only 42' but it has done a lot of work for us.

Ours is not self leveling though I have to hand crank each stabilizer to level. How did yous self level?

That's not me. Based on the belly, though, I could see the mistake - it does look like me :).

so my wife peeked into the torn pants and told me that we were going to the ER. Dang - "I figured as much". Hate when that happens. The cut was actually quite clean and straight. I had a really nice chain on the saw :).

JayC

LOL Sharp chains that must be the ticket if we are going to hack ourselves up with our chainsaws it needs to be good and sharp! :D

Yeah on my third try at being the idiot of the year my wife was near by when I shut the saw shut down and then she heard me say uh oh she says "did you do it again!?" I said yeah but its not too bad (wrong) so she took a look and lost her balance lucky she was kneeling poor gal hates the sight of gore bad me.

Yeah, we have full harnesses, I make my employee wear one at all times, sometimes I'll just wear a positioning belt, it limits your movement with a shortened lanyard (OSHA doesn't care about the owner of a company)
If you can't get over the rail you can't fall out. If the machine goes down the harness wont help ya.

We work with very high lifts up to 120 ft, usually 66' and 86', on those it's not comfortable without full harness.

One button, all hydraulic, all four will go down til contact with ground, the machine will then adjust the outriggers until it's perfectly level
JLG makes some nice equipment, most of the lifts we rent are JLG

Yep, and you might end up being the only man left standing!!!

What's a little, old man to do? Been sawing for 40 years without chaps, with my full body strength and the family around for help. Now, I'm old, weak and alone in the woods. But I ain't gonna quit.... might even buy some of them fancy pants if they make 'em for 5'4" skinny little guys.:D Thanks for the info and the warnings however.

All this talk of chaps just made me go out and buy a set......Obviously not worth the risk for $65. ......:(

They make 'em for your size. Believe it or not the best climbers are not that big! A lot less weight to haul up the tree.
This old and weak stuff has to be a joke :), my 74 year old FIL can still out climb me but I can beat him in a foot race. LOL
Best not to be out alone though even if your only ground cutting. There will be no one around to video any goof ups to put on u-tube.

I did a similar thing, knocked the saw into my knee while pulling brush away from where I just cut. The saw was barely above an idle but it just caught my knee. Was going to ignore it, but it just nicked a little artery, and I could not stop the bleeding. ER doc who gave me a couple stitches used to be a tree guy, gave me whatfor... and then actually wrote me a prescription for chaps. Even though I had been using chain saws for 45 years without an incident until then, I filled that script, and I use them regularly. Never too old to learn...

At my company we stress safety in a big way. I try to carry that same mindset when I'm at home but sometimes I take shortcuts. After reading about the incidents with chainsaws (and I use one quite a bit) I too will get me a pair of chaps. Also too for a good pair of goggles/face shield and hearing protection.
