I had a fairly basic 2007 Ford Ranger XL that had a MSRP of $18555. In todays dollars that would be $29000.

It looks like the 90 model did come with ABS standard, and Power steering; but even an AM radio was an optional upgrade
I believe that was rear wheel ABS only, which was the same as having no brakes in snowy conditions.

My Colorado has about the same footprint as my old '84 F150 and weighs about 460lbs more. (4300 vs 4760)
Likely the extra weight is from the extended cab, 4WD... and a little more on me than 40 years ago.

I had an 85 s10 extended cab with the v6. I was able to get 25 - 26 mpg on the highway. That was the main reason I went with the smaller truck. It had a/c and no stereo and rubber floor, which I prefer over carpet. I added a nice after market sound system. The first time I carried a load in it and tied a loop in the rope to pull it tight against the front of the bed I bent the front of the bed. The early edition of ABS and the crummy uniroyal tiger paw radials barely stopped the truck in an emergency. I know one wreck I had was due to this combo not stopping the truck. I had another wreck as well that likely would have been prevented with the after market tires I put on later. Those tires actually gripped the road. The ABS brakes in that thing would pulse and not lock up. After I replaced the tires it rode and handled much better. The v6 was supposed to run on regular unleaded, but it clattered every time I went up a hill unless I had premium in it. I towed a 15' skeeter with a 60 horse Merc on it. It was not that heavy and it towed ok. I don't miss most of the 70s and 80s vehicles that tried to reduce weight and get higher mpg's by using under powered engines. To be fair I had a full size chevy 10 rental with a regular cab and 8 foot bed one time when my S10 was in the shop. I'd always had chevy trucks to that point. The ride on that truck was terrible. The back end was so light that it was bouncy without a load. I previously had a Big10 that I really liked, but those 2 got me away from Chevy.

No, but in 86 I could get a chicken fried steak and 2 made from scratch vegetables for $2.75 at the local beer and liquor store that had a kitchen serving lunch.
You got Brisket & Shiner Bock down there, too.
I was down Texas a couple years ago for a few days and came home 5 pounds heavier.

I’m afraid to move down south. I’d eat myself to 300 pound with all that good food.

I know this is likely a generation thing; but just before the world ended in the great apocalypse in 2008, I think we kinda peaked in trucks. Then, we had about 8 years of something, and then maybe 2015-18, things started moving forward again.

So, my 2005 Chevy 2500HD, 6.0, 4x4, extended, with CD player, power seats, power windows, and crusie; I paid $33.5k (maybe it was $35?) for. If that same truck was available, for the same money, I would absolutely consider it. I would add aftermarket (but not rigged up) back up camera; maybe a hardwired, (again not rigged up) power inverter. Maybe some if that is rose colored glasses though.

When I look at early/mid 90s trucks I've driven, none where something i would seek out again.

Too add, most of the early-mid 90s trucks ive used have been F150s (couple Dakota too), but largely work trucks, of one form or another. So, that influences my thoughts too; and those reg cab, vinyl benchs were not something built for hours of sitting.

Don't forget the beef ribs. I have a pit made from a 120 gallon propane tank. It does a good job on the briskets and ribs. I also have a smaller pit that was my dad's. One time my wife and her brother and sister in law went to the casino while I stayed home by myself and ran the smaller smoker. I cooked pork ribs, chicken, sausage, pork chops, and I can't remember if it was a pork butt or something else. Might have been a brisket. Every time something got done I would eat and toss more meat in the pit. By the time the last of it was done I'd had enough. I probably ate 3 pounds of smoked meat while they were gone. They feasted when they got back. I'd weigh much more than 300 if I still ate like that.

I highly doubt that ^ from GM was what the powertrain chief-engineer wanted to do, but it likely hit the price point GM wanted. Unfortunately, didn't help the image and confidence that N. American consumers had in light-diesels.
I think this is the reason that many Americans think an inline 6 is so much sturdier than a V8: GM Oldsmobile 88 5.7 diesel, the 6.5, Cummins V8 diesels, were all low budget high rpm engines, often sleeveless.

Ford could have picked the Navistar DT360 instead of the which is very similar to the BTA5.9... GM rebadged International DT466 too as Detroit series 40..
