so its a maschio rototiller around 5.5 feet, i picked it up because it's in amazing condition for its age but there was one problem, the tines look like straight knife edges (no curve in them anymore) under closer inspection they look as if they were machined this way because they are all perfectly the same, just wondering if anyone has an idea, mabe i can trade these for the ones i want..... that is if these are not just completely worn out, and just out of curiosidy, does anyone know about how much this big thing weighs? thanks

Congrats on your new tiller.

Maybe they used it as a sod cutter. I can't think of any other reason why the knives would be straight.

I'd guess it weighs in the neighborhood of 750 pounds, based on my tiller weight.

I have heard of those tines somewhere before, I think they're used for "slicing" prior to overseeding or to open up soil/sod to allow better rain penetration.

Thanks for the help, i was also thinking it is some kind of cutter for roots that someone made out of old tines because it shure looks like it would chop any roots in its path, but i think what you said Reg makes sense, it would open up the ground without completely turning over the soil.

I have one of the little Mantis tillers and one of the accessories I have is their "aerator" which is nothing more than an attachment just like the tiller except for the blades being straight. In other words, as you said it "slices" the ground and I sowed some grass seed where I'd used that attachment, and it did real well in those grooves; looked like I'd planted it in neat rows. But my seed didn't do much between the rows.:D

But I haven't seen any of the tractor powered tillers with straight blades or tines.
