I think DIRTY kitty litter would be better

My sister-n-law (pretty much a nut & awfully idiotic to boot) used to do this all the time with junk mail and credit card mailers. (mail it back with pre-addressed envelop paid for by them) with heavy or junk in there with her address attached...

I don't have a solution for the junk mail but I do forward calls from persistent telemarketers to their own head office. If I can't figure out where to send the call I just forward them to each other.

If you read the fine print on the 'pre-approved' credit card junk there is a number you can call to have you removed from mailings. I believe it's a voice mail box and you have to leave info including your SSN though.

Definitely don't leave your SSN with anyone you are not doing business with. That sounds too much like a scam.

I have used something in the past that guarantees you to get pesky mailing list.

Years ago people complained about pornographic mailings, and Congress set up a law so that recipients of unwanted pornographic material could have their named removed from mailing lists and any further mailing would be unlawful, making them subject to fines or jail time. Well, for some reason, a challenge to the law ended up in Supreme Court. So the court said that whether something is pornographic or not is in the eye of the beholder, so if you deem a credit card application to be pornographic, then so be it. So the law stands.

So if you get junk mail from a certain place and you can't get it stopped, fill out a prohibitory order from the Post Office and it will make it unlawful for them to send anything else to your address. But if you get any further mailings, what you do is send those mailing to the post office referencing the original Prohibitory Order and they go after them with postal inspectors and the law.

Note that I was very disappointed to find out that I couldn't use Prohibitory Orders to stop those pesky mailings from the IRS.

You can download a copy or Form 1500 or ask for a copy to be mailed to you by telephoning a major Post Office in your area. Fill it out (it's very short), attach it to one of their opened letters, and lodge it at any Post Office. The form was originally intended to stop pornographic junk mail, but the Supreme Court of the United States has affirmed your right to stop any mail that you don't want. If the company continues to send you mail or sell your name they risk being prosecuted as criminals. Burnett comments that with this move ``name removal is virtually assured.'' (They will still store your name in their databases, but they are unlikely to continue renting it.)

It's not a scam, it is done by the credit card associations (visa, mastercard, amex) the SSN is how they identify you. There is a law requiring them to provide this 'removal' service from pre-approved applications. Personally I have never done it though as leaving my SSN anywhere is not something I do.

As a side note, the associations _require_ issuing banks to provide a list of their customers as part of using their system/logo. It is a source of income for them. If you want to start a credit card company you can purchase say Chase's best customers information from the association and start sending out 'introductory rate' mailers.
