My dad picked up a Jubilee several years ago, drove from the auction and parked it in my yard. I've done a few things over the years to keep it running but it had a 3pt lift that functions up and down but will not lift my miniscule 230lbs. So it hasn't done anything and his health has been going down so he never came over and got messing with it to take to his house and use. So, I've finally said enough waiting I might as well get on it to fix the lift and a carb issue that has puzzled me. It starts easily and runs without problem but only on half choke. I've cleaned the sediment bowl and blown out the fuel line so I get good flow, I've cleaned the carb and all passages and put back together twice....probably three times actually.

I noticed the choke shaft spring on the outside and back of carb was broken. Ordered spring and was removing the butterfly screws to choke shaft and not sure why I'm not able to get the choke plate slid back far enough to pull the choke shaft out. This choke has an extra spring loaded deal on the main choke butterfly/plate. After looking through some parts online I see this tractor is missing a spring which goes across the extra choke plate deal, so maybe that's the half choke needed issue.

Anyway, if there is a trick to sliding that butterfly off the choke shaft I'd appreciate some knowledge thrown my way. Dont have a book on this one and my 8n books wouldn't help either I dont believe. My 8N has a zenith carb and no extra plate.

Thanks
Tom

The choke shaft has a slit in the middle, you have to slide the choke plate out and then you remove to choke shaft. Yes there should be a spring across that little flipper on the choke plate. Yes make cause it to need a little choke and probably better starting also. Should be able to find the springs online.

It looks like you have your answer, but for future reference, here is parts info on the MS428:

Thanks for reply. No problem with seeing the slit and sliding the plate out but it gets to a point where it just wont go any further back as it's hitting the sides of carb and there's just a little more plate that has not cleared the slit if that makes sense. I tried turning shaft so plate is up, down, and in middle but there just doesn't seem to be enough clearance to slide that little bit further without me putting alot of force on the plate.

Getting it back in once I order the new spring across the top seems impossible right now until I can get it out. Seeing the parts breakdown online is what gave me the realization this never had that spring since dad got the tractor.
thanks again
Tom

This video was interesting in that the butterfly goes into the choke shaft slit just backwards of how the one on this jubilee is. I have to pulll the choke plat out towards the bowl where this one is going in from the air cleaner side.

Ok, one more video that shows choke plate being inserted from the air cleaner side which to me makes more sense as there just isn't enough space to insert plate from bowl side. I may have to ruin the choke plate on there now in order to get it out but I think I'll pay up for the premium Steiner parts kit that has the spring, choke plate, and all other parts. I noticed both throttle shaft and choke shaft have alot of side to side movement which probably doesn't help with the carb's performance. ( video starts at about 11:43 for choke plate)

Got back to it and forced the choke plate out of the slit, slightly bent but flattened it back out. Installed the choke shaft return spring and temporarily put the choke plate on the shaft which I did from the air cleaner side. I'm hoping this is the correct way to do it. I have the carb kit that is about 60 bucks coming which also has the choke flapper spring included.

Looking at the PDF I think I have the flapper door facing the wrong way. Yikes!

Yep, you need to flip it to the other side.

Well, I have narrowed down the problem to the Marvel Schebler TSX428 bowl. I literally rebuilt the carb replacing one part at a time and trying on the tractor hoping to pin point the issue. Nothing helped with the only runs on choke issue until I got the idea of putting the carb from his super early Ford 2000 with the same carb on it. With just a brief peak to make sure it was clean put the other carb on and runs great, no choke. Decided to put the Jubilee's top half of carb on the 2000's bowl...runs great, no choke. Put the 2000's top half of carb on Jubilee's bowl, only runs on choke. Put the Jubilee's top half of carb back on it own bowl, only runs on choke. Now that bowl has been cleaned many times and visually can't see any reason for it not to work properly, new gaskets make no difference. A bit baffling but there's an issue with it. I do alot of carbs and been thinking about an ultrasonic cleaner, may have to finally pony up for it. Anyway, here's a pic of the carb choke plate with the flapper positioned in the carb on the 2000. If I installed the Jubilee's wrong someone prior to my dad did this one. Anyway, I didn't want to leave a thread unresolved even though it's kind of still not 100% complete. I at least know it's not fuel supply, timing, spark, or some other issue outside of the original bowl. I am now on to the next problem with the Jubilee....the lift.

That choke plate is in backwards and is missing the spring that holds it.

I agree, that flapper should open towards the carb venturi side and like the Jubilee, spring is missing. I've replaced that spring on the Jubilee and will fix the 2000 the same.
