Joystick for FEL 723 - question

Question on the joystick control valve. What is the difference between the 3 position vs 4 position? Assume the 4 position does some type of additional function. Needless to say, I'm hydraulics illiterate. Thanks for comments.

It is not 3 position or 4 position, its 3-way or 4-way.
