Jotul wood stoves. What are they worth?

/ Jotul wood stoves. What are they worth? #11
I don't know the first Jotul, a very interesting looking stove, but the second one is a model 602. Here is a link to the Jotul web site. Jøtul F 602 CB Woodstove
The 602 is a great stove, and I believe that the new one is the same as the older stove and meets EPA standards without airtubes or a catalytic converter. I may be mistaken about that.
$200-300 is about right, provided that the parts, the back, the inner plates, are in useable condition. They are replacable, but Jotul does not give them away and they are cast iron so the shipping can add up quick. Don't ask me how I know.

Don't know why Canada wouldn't allow this stove. These are still sold here in the US and are not equipt with catalytic converters.

I'd also add that here in the US they're offering a 1500. tax credit on new stoves.

Couple problems here.

There are two current ways that manufacturers have been able to gain EPA certification on stoves. A cat converter or air tubes. No other way has been successful in a woodstove. Often, a manufacturer such as Jotul will add one of these technologies to a stove to maintain the use of the castings but still be able to sell the stove. Your daddy's 602 is not the same as a modern 602, on the inside anyway. The only way to know if the stove is EPA compliant is to read the tag on the rear of the stove. No tag = no certification = not legal to buy, sell, install, use, etc is most parts of the US.

The tax credit is not 1500$ towards a new stove. It is a 30% rebate on the value up to 1500$. So you would have to buy a 4500$ stove to get the 1500$ and that is a very very expensive stove.

The new 602 sells for around 1000$. Used should be half that. Used and uncertified should be half again for 250$ and remember that all parties are probably guilty of breaking a stupid law in the transaction.

I particularly like the first one with the cool flue outlet casting. Neat stoves.

HB,

It's interesting we came to similar estimates on the value of the stove despite the fact that neither of us know how old the stove is

I don't know how much a good Harmon or Quadra Fire pellet stove is but I'd venture a guess that with installation, in these parts anyway, you're talking some serious moola.

My sense is you may have a beef with the EPA regulations on wood stoves. If that's the case then all I can say is I don't think this thread has anything to do with that issue.

Age has little to do with value on a used Jotul.

I am a huge fan of clean burning stoves such as modern EPA units. I like cat stoves the best due to their long burn times. You can't get that with modern non-cat units.

Who is talking about pellet stoves? Seems the Jotuls burn cordwood.

So why is EPA anything a concern if you now have a custom built one?? Did it get certified? Frankly I'd buy one if you were close and put it in one of my shops and to **** with any sort of certification crap.

Oh, I don't know the Jotul stove. It may be head and shoulders above what I am replacing. I was was just relating my recent wood stove adventures.
My replacement stove most likely will not have a catalytic converter since that is just another point of maintenance. IMO I just need the proper certifications.

I read quite a bit on Hearth.com, and there is a way around the mandated epa rules for stoves. It is mentioned in that forum. When I run across it again I'll post it. Has something to do with a loophole for fireplaces. Some manufacturers use this to continue to build wood stoves, just not the very high efficenty ones such as Lopi, Jotul, Pacific Energy, Blaze King, etc. These high efficenty stoves consume approximately 1/3 less wood that the stoves such as U.S. Stove, etc. Great reading over there. Highbeam stated it correctly. If the stove has no cat, or no second burn arrangement with air tubes, it's most likely not going to meet the epa regs for the tax credit. Some of these high eff stoves are up in the 85% efficently range, and put out almost no fly ash. Very Clean. Jotul stoves are some of the best in the world wide industry of wood stove manufactures. The new F50TL pictured is made entirely in Maine. A first for Jotul. It cuts the labor rate from Norway to manufacture right in half being total made in the good old USA. $50hr, to $25hr.
