Well we took a major step back in tech-noid -ology.

You all are ranting and raving about your high-speed broadband access while I get to rant about my 29.4bps link.

So I figured you all would share your therapy sessions with me now. Seeing how I am in the middle of a major telecommunications market and middle of a high-tech industry and I cannot get pigeon service that is any faster than this. What a crock.

I cannot even get the telco to run another wire to my house. I have three jacks on the NID. They say that is OK. Hey! I need five phones you dimwits. And BTW that white cable next to the NID is the one I needed hookup too.

Welcome back to the 18th century. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Why are we lagging in technology?

Sorry Mike. I'm over here in the "Rural" Shenandoah valley and work for the local telecom here (they've been in business since 1897). We are providing dsl and wireless broadband to some of the dog-gondest places. Seems liek you should be able to get something over there. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My sympathies. I keep hearing rumors of DSL out here at my place........I had to get ISDN not cheap and ISDN modems are not easy to find, but I do get a full 64K of thruput. Sucks, but I can live with it. And yes I know you can get 128K thru ISDN going dual channel, but it is HIGH per minute stuff here.

Why, no HS service, It is all about money......

As fast as that area is growing I figure you have good internet service. We have cable up here on the mountain in warren co, and just found out that the place were moving to in page county also has cable. I know manassas is using bpl, any chance its headed out there?

BPL is still pretty experimental. Don't look for it to be widespread anytime soon.

There's a lot of opposition to it from radio people - amatuer and otherwise. It's going to be an interference nightmare.

There's always Direcway satellite service. I have no personal experience with it, but it's probably better than nothing.

Dialup = nothing.

I lived in a neighborhood that had DSL and cable available all around it, but not -right- there. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I went with SprintBroadband (a wireless service) and it was decent. Most of the time my speed was in the 150k range. Not good cable or DSL speeds, but it sure beat the 19.2 I could get via dialup.

Do a search for a WISP (wireless ISP) in your area - you might find something. I tried HERE but struck out.

Maybe you should start one! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I have tried contacting WiMAX providers and luring them to my farm, have silo, have LOS. I just need a repeater close by that I can piggy back off.

I have looked at startup costs for an ISP. Ouch. 300k is a little steep.

The number of McMansions springing up would make one think their is oppertunity here. Hello?

The BPL stuff 20 minutes away, went bust on their pilot.
The cable company, less than 10 miles away, does'nt want to deal with this area.
The phone company is in the same mindset, and will not even run new wire to my house.
Satellite will not give me the security I need to do my job, cost effective thing.
It is embarrassing, and I am embarrassed.

Most of all, I feel sorry for my kids, who when they start school, no longer have research available to them.

Bad move on my part.

What gets me is the cable and telco companies fighting over broadband customers, save a dollar here and there by switching companies. They use this logic instead of building out infrastructure. What gives?

I think my sister lives in one of those mini-mcmansions down your way - over on Rosemount Place. Anyway - You say you have 3 jacks on your NID - does this mean you have 3 lines or just one? I have some units called WebRamps that were used for combining phone lines for faster dial-up speeds. One issue will be if your ISP is prickly about simultaneous connections from the same account. The box basically works by managing the traffic through 2 or more lines and just presents a translated single address to your computer so it looks like a faster dial-up circuit. I haven't used them in a few years and they are just collecting dust...

So let me know if this is something you are interested in.

My best spped connected directly to any of the jacks on the NID is a robust 2900bps.

To me this indicates poor quality provider lines. I mentioned this, but the phone company said on the checkbox sheet provided - "No problem found".
