i posted a thread about my 318 lawn and garden tractor with starter / flywheel issues....i have had no responses back on this. it took me 3 hours to register here....so i could try to find some help. im about to say **** with the internet and just go buy a kubota. i bought this to restore.....its all painted in showroom condition....new decals....now the **** starter is giving me fits. i have a new starter and a new flywheel in it. started it 3 times....starter sounds like ****.....and its burring up the the teeth on the new flywheel. im at lost here??????? any help?????

Having one of those myself I know how you feel. Mine has not run in a few years now. It takes so much time to get everything apart and is so frustrating when it doesn't work right. I have bee toying with the thought of repowering mine it is a nice machine when working well.

What is the Onan model number?

It might be the same or similar to the Onan used in the Case 4XX series garden tractors.

i got the problem solved. i made a bracket to support the starter....the onan has a weak 2 bolt method to hold it in place.....the 2 bolts are not enough to hold it secure. i run it today 10 or 15 times.....starter works fine now. now i need to remove the fuel pump.....it wont idle or run as high speed without half choke on. i went through the carb. and cleaned it....so its gotta be the pump now. i made a bracket to go thru the frame to to brace the starter with a large brass washer....to keep it from shifting. onan had a bad design on this starter mounting. 2 bolts are not enough to keep this starter from pivoting. thus all the issues with onan stater flywheel problems. i been a machinist all my life..there is always a way to improve a flaw.

Just curious... what model of 25-35 year old garden tractor of Kubota's where you thinking about. Sounds like the Dupont overhaul the 318 got did not fix everything?
