If you want HST, then the JD's 4x20 series would be your choice in a new CUT and would be between 35-50 pto hp. If you want a rotary batwing mower, the smallest sizes I know are 15' and the 4x20 series is way too small. A 15' batwing mower weighs 5000 lbs or more. The larger 5000 series is still probably too small for a 15' batwing, unless the mowing is relatively easy. The 6000 series is more ideal. Neither the the 5000 or 6000 will have HST. The 4x20 series should be able to handle a 10' pull type mower.

If you have bad knees I would recommend the power reverser. You dont have to use the clutch to go from forward to reverse. Great for loader work and field work. I would go with at least a 75hp tractor for the 12ft mower and even that is on the small side I would think. What kind of stuff are you mowing (grass or brush)? Larger 5000 series would work for you I would think depending on what your mowing.

Go look at a 4720. You can get a cab model with Hst tranny.

I would only recommend a 10' cutter for this model. (You mentioned smallest).

Otherwise, look at a 5525 cab model, you could handle a 12 footer that will fold up.

Bigger yet is a 5603 that can handle a 15 footer.

I have a HX15 batwing cutter and pull it with a 7210 JD. It handles it easily. A 6,000 series tractor would run that easy enough. I am not sure if a 5000 series would spin that or not.

I have never seen a smaller batwing than a 15ft. I am pretty sure you can get a power shift, or an IVT(Infinately Variable Transmission) that would not need a clutch to operate. You can get a very nice cab with all the comforts of home, and Front wheel assist or 2wd.

Hi:

I think you want the biggest tractor you can afford but... ;)

Summer last year (2007) the dealer brought by a used 15' batwing mower for me to try with my 3720 cab. HP wise I was on the lower recommend end. The only thing that concerned me was the transport tongue weight of the batwing It was over that of the rating for the 3x20, and 4x20 series. Operating tongue weight was under the 500+lb limit.

I mowed about 5 acres with it and it worked fine. the 3720 had plenty of power and I was mowing 3-4mph most of the time and up to 5 at times. The tractor had no problem pulling it, turning, etc. even sideways on a slight slope. Manuevering the best in tight spots was a little bit of a chore. I ended up deciding it was too big for my lot and was beyond my needs... (It was). I can't remember if I used 4wd on the small slope I had but I didn't spin/dig at all.

Anyway, I would tend to think, based on my experience any of the 4x20 series would be fine.
I was running maybe 5600lbs when I was using it with my 3720 cab (3600 + 900lbs in the tires(Large R4's) + 1100lbs for the loader frame (no bucket).

Note that this is a Finish mower. If you were rough cutting it would take much more hp.

Two more pics. And No, I wasn't running the 72" MMM while I was using the FM1015R. :)

It was pretty cool to try it out. I would have gotten it about 1/2 price.

Also, the new 4720's are 66hp and I think 58 at the PTO. They boosted them this year.

I was running with 35 PTOhp and hardly had to slow down with 2 weeks growth.

15' batwing? I would look into the 6000' series with the IVT transmission.

It depends on what kind of mower you are looking at. Orlo has pic of a batwing finish mower made by Frontier. Others are talking about batwing rough cut mowers. JC

If your cutting grass that tall, then I would have to assume you want a batwing rotary mower and not a finish batwing mower. How many acres to mow? What kind of finish look do you want? I am not sure you know what your want or needs are. New JD 6000 cab with new 15' batwing mower is going to cost 65-75K. New 4x20 series with batwing finish mower near 45-50K. Are you really looking to spend that much?

I agree with orlo.

My jd dealer said a 4720 would be plenty to run a 14' batwing 3-60" deck Landpride mower.

You figure, i have a 16hp 1990 lawn mower with a 48" deck, 16hp "gas" x 3 is 48hp. a 58pto hp 4720 would be plenty unless your cutting some heavy stuff, which if your using it as a grooming mower, there should be no problem.

I can bog down our 5420 with 65PTO hp with a 6' cutter in our bahia grass. My 4310 will only cut about 1/2 of the 5' cutter in the same grass. So I'm just saying it depends on what you are cutting. It figures up to roughly 10hp per foot of blade to cut Bahia grass. It cuts like steel cable. I have no idea how cow's digest it but they like it.

I agree.. you need a rough cut mower... 2' tall grass is thick stuff.

I mow with a 95hp tractor and a JD 1517 batwing.. if I hit 3' grass.. I will take an rpm hit and have to give it foot throttle to keep her rpm's up ( plenty of power available to do so.. but I wouldn't if I was using a 40-50-60 hp machine. ).

IMHO.. I'd buy a used batwing.. and then find a used ag tractor to run it.. stuff inthe 75-135 hp can be had under 10k$ and a used mower can go from 1500$ to 6500$.

I picked up my used 1998 JD 1517 from a horse farm.. it was WELL used.. but in decent order.. cost me 2000$ plus another 500$ to fix er' up and about a month of sweat equity.

if you want all this new... I hope you got deeeeeep pockets...

I have a JD 5525 pulling a HX-15 - it works well. I think

I figured my 4720 would pull it ok on level ground but if you have much if any of a hill or have to go thru ditches, etc. = the batwing will be driving the tractor and that can get really ugly in a hurry.

Have a 4120 w/15 foot batwing. Use on rolling terain. Have had no problems with power. Mower is a Jacobson. Came from a golf course. But you would have to mow more often. Figure 8 inch max growth is what it could comfortably handle. More than that you need to be hogging. Getting ready to trade the whole outfit in for a cab unit. Don't need the mower anymore as I went to hay production.

Sounds like you are talking about a finish / grooming mower.. not a hd rough cut mower..

So what is the minimum you need for that batwing? Sounds like 95 HP works with no problems, would 75HP struggle??

/ john deere to pull batwing mower #20
I have seen a 70 hp tractor pull a 15' mower in flat areas with low growth.. IE.. just clipping thin grass tops.. I do not consider it an ideal setup... A 12'er would probably be a better fit to 75 hp... but then it all depnds on what type of stuff you mow, and how often you want to mow.

I pull a 10' mower with my ford 5000... it's 67 or so at the pto. It will walk down just about anything the font axle wil make it over.

the 7610s has no problems under most conditions.. i have occasionally made it grunt and smoke a bit mowing 3' grass.. and 5-6' brush in 5th gear with a 15' mower.. I did have to bump the hand throttle up a bit to maintain pto speed.. but i still had throttle left over and the engine was still responsive to the throttle so it was not being overloaded.. though. I probably could have taken it a bit easier on the girl and downshifted to 4 or 3.. but I was curious as to what she would do. I can tell you the 3' thick sawgrass was alot more load than 5-6' stemmy brush.
