Thanks, for the kind words and information. I did purchase an extended warranty( 4 years) so hopefully if I am gone my wife does have an avenue to get the tractor fixed.
That being said, the JD seems to be about twice the tractor my old Craftsman was. The Hydrostatic transmission is really sweet. I have about .5 - .75 of an acre to mow, pretty level overall.
Thanks again, glad to be part of this forum
I'm not sure of everything on the LA125, but it has the same Owner's Manual as my LA145. On page 30 under "Service Transmission / Checking Transmission" it says, "The transmission is a sealed component. No maintenance is required on this transmission. If you suspect any transmission problems, please contact your authorized dealer."
I also suggest paying close attention to the service intervals on page 23. After the first 8 hours of use, there is an extensive service. I'd compare it to a compact tractor's 50 hr service. It includes changing the oil (no filter change required) and lubricating the deck and front axle.
Each spindle on your deck has grease zerks. The front axle pivot and wheel spindles also have zerks. If your wife is going to be using the mower when you are not there, then she needs to become familiar with these service points. Normal service has to be performed by you even though you have that extended warranty.
The deck has plastic covers over each spindle with slots cut out so you can spray air or water in there to get loose grass and debris out. The center spindle is the hardest to clean of course. Does the LA125 have three blades? The advice about the center spindle might not apply since I believe the 42" deck only has two blades.
Draining oil is a surprise. The oil drain has a plastic bayonet lock cover that seals with an o-ring around the drain pipe. The bayonet cover is easily removed by just twisting and then the oil gushes. That was a surprise to me. You will have to keep a close eye on this because a child could easily remove this fitting. It just seems too easy to remove. I guess I'll see in the long run, but I would have preferred that it at least was as hard as a child-proof pill bottle.
I'm also not too crazy about how abruptly the electric PTO grabs when you pull the button on the dash. The clutch just engages so quickly and so well that it shakes pretty well even at low engine rpm. Time will tell if this is a problem, but so far it is fine. I like the RIO button for reverse mowing. I thought I would want to defeat this feature, but it works so well I'm leaving it as it is.
So far I love the LA145 and so does my wife. We bought a plastic cover for it at TSC because birds decided the hood vents were a great place to build a nest. We keep it in under a raised deck for now with the cover on, and it is no longer a problem.
Read your manual and become familiar with the tractor. Keep it clean and maintain it properly and most likely you will have good service. I bought the JD because it had the best features of any $2000 mower I looked at. The LA100 series mowers are a very good value in this price range. When comparing "apples to apples" the JD stands out as a superior value based on all the hands-on comparison I have done.
Good luck and thanks for your military service.
