I own a LX5 rotary cutter and would like to replace the gear case oil. I'm confused on how to drain out the old oil? There is check plug that can be removed but that is part way up the side of the case and seems like this will leave behind most of the oil?

Can you take the top off the gear box? that is what I did on my LX4 - then i used a 'sucker' to draw out the oil then refilled..

Trying to go thru the side hole was difficult to say the least

One more question.. Do you recall if there is a gasket for the top of gear box that would need to be replaced?

I think mine has/had a paper gasket.. Ive had my since 2007 and check the oil level every year at least and never had a leak.

You can pump it out the level hole, tip it on end, and/or pull the cap. You must have used the shredder a lot--you seeing contaminants?

My 717 dosen't have a drain plug, i removed the top after setting the front on some 6x6's so all the oil would drain to the rear, then pumped it.
Flushed it with some diesel & refilled, had some cork gasket & made one from it, no problems so far.

Seconds on use of an oil extractor. Oil is very heavy. Took a while. Two vacuums buildups did it though. Just go have a cuppa coffee while it's sucking. Just did my RC2048 this afternoon. Never changed the oil in my LX4; tractor had 660 hours at least half on the LX4. Didn't have the oil extractor then. Think some people turn them upside down.

Easy to fill from the top hole, leaving the plug in the check hole open to know when it starts to come out.
