The Tuff Torq K46 died on me Saturday in the midst of mowing. Shimmy, shake, grunt, squeal, squall - stop. Talked to the local JD service shop this morning and as expected gotta get a new one since these units are "not serviceable". The quote came in at $1026....gulp, wow! Wasn't expecting it to be that darn much. At any rate, I'm not sure its worth it. Thought about DIY but not crazy about that either. The machine is a 2005 model with about 450 hrs on it. No other major problems thus far other than I replaced both deck spindles this spring (one froze up and disintegrated - got the grease-able kind this time). Its been a pretty good machine but wondering if its time to upgrade? I really dont see spending that much money on something that may be on its last leg anyway. What say the masses?

Might be worth it to look for a used machine that you can steal the tranny out of and save some money.

Parted out machines of that model may be available on CL or on eBay.
