John Deere LA
I recently restored a John Deere LA tractor and since the information tag is missing I really don't know what year it is. Is there any other way of determining the year of my tractor?

:welcome: to TBN

You may be able to do some detective work by going to jdparts.com and put in the LA model for a complete listing of part numbers, etc.

http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/pdfs/PC0151.pdf

On page four, there is a short description of the serial numbers and how they might relate to different parts that changed during the LA production. These changes may help estimate the serial number of your LA.

I had one in the middle 60's and wish I had been able to keep it. But storage wasn't available so had to let it go. As a young boy (about 3 or 4), I used to walk in the furrow behind the neighbors' LA when he was plowing. Great memory.

The early LA's were built with solid bar stock and with a wartime material shortage later models were thick walled pipe.
Also, check your magneto. The 1st year (1941) magneto is about 4" long with an additional 3" long 1 piece plastic cover. Near the end of the 1st year production (ser # 4533) it was changed to a magneto that appears more upright with a 2 piece plastic cover.
Also, the brake bands had a serial break at 6029-6030 (beginning model year 1943). The early band had a rod mounted with the band; the latter had it as a 2 piece with a pin to connect.
There are a few more serial breaks but these are the most obvious. Hope this helps...

Well, you were wondering what year your JD LA was and I was just looking at my parts manual to see where there were updates to parts. So, if you knew what type of brake bands your tractor had ( a 1 piece or 2 piece) then the parts book would say that your tractor was built before 1944 or after.
