Is the small wire the one that the ignition tells to switch the solenoid to allow the battery voltage through to the starter?

Yes. After all the hoops and safety's.:confused2:

Ok i dropped the starter off yesterday to be cleaned out and to have the solenoid replaced. $40. Not too bad.

When i get it back today ill make the V checks as you suggest.

As for the meter probe picture, i thought that was funny too. I must have slipped off the terminal just as the picture snapped.

Just heard from starter guy. Replaced solenoid, armature and brushes were all gummed up so he cleaned those too. Works good as new so he says. $45.00

Update:
Threw the rebuilt starter in tonight and got a little more action out of it. Then i decided to use some jumper cables and run from battery negative to starter case and battery positive to solenoid. Starter sprang to life now.

It has occasional issues engaging and actually spinning the flywheel but it works 7 out of 10 tries.

I could actually get the engine to run as long as I sprayed gas into the carbs air intake. Im thinking now that the fuel pump is prob dried out and needs some cleaning.

What do yall think?

PS: When the engine was running it sounded like a normal engine to me, no weird knocks or noises. I should prob also re-do the battery cables also since the jumper cable test proved pretty successful.
