Changed starter hookup battery starter got extremely hot .key wasn’t on .regulator maybe or key switch?

Your description of the problem isn't very clear to me. If the starter is energized all the time it may be the key switch or it could be the starter solenoid. You should have a voltmeter on hand for troubleshooting. A better description of your problem will probably result in steps to troubleshoot.
