John Deere 990 Cost and Performance

Mike5.56 - I have a 990 and am 6'-1" and ~240lbs. No issues whatsoever with the size of the deck; controls; ergonomics; etc.... Only time I've had problems is when I get lazy and let my right knee start operating the FEL joystick....quickly learned not to nudge it and doing fine now. I opted for the 990 to get great power in a smaller package for my 34acres and xmas tree farm. Also went with a LX5 cutter which is narrower for manuverability in the trees. You can also add rear hyraulics to operate a chipper or other implements.

Do not buy any other CUT until you get a chance to sit and operate a 990. Living with regret is a terrible thing...........Good luck

A couple of years ago I was very interested in a 990 but everytime I approched a dealer (3 dealers) they proceeded to tell me why I didn't want a 990 but really should get a 3x or maybe a 4x John Deere. I had no luck in finding one on a dealers lot so I kinda forgot the whole idea. I now have a caseih D40 which I am very happy with. I still think the 990 is an excellent tractor and is more than adequate for your 40 acres.

If the 990 sounds good, why not look at Mahindra and Kioti too? They make some more basic tractors that compete with the 990, from what I understand. They also make ones that compete with the more modern designs.

Have you also thought about getting a used machine? Late 80's to early 90's Fords were good machines. 3910 or better yet the 3930 on ebay right now would fit the bill. Older ones like the 5000 would be nice too. These will be more tractor and less price than a new 990, but used has it's pitfalls...

I absolutely love our John Deere 990. I have mowed, pulled huge trees, chained and pulled stumps, graded roads, bushhogged our pastures, and I could go on and on. If I had a choice I would be on our John Deere 990 working every single day! The only problem I have had was it doesn't have a skid plate, I was working clearing an area and had the hydraulics clamp pulled off by a grape vine. Luckily before I got too close to the fire I had going, I realized something was wrong and stopped the tractor immediately. I was able to reattach the hose (hydraulic fluid was hot) before every bit of it leaked out, but still had no hydraulics at all. I would like to see a protective piece of something around that clamp so it won't happen again. Could have been disasterous had I been pushing logs into the fire, which I would have been doing in just a moment! Still love the John Deere 990! I think it is an incredibly powerful machine in a compact package. I just with more women would work on a tractor! Or they would invent an "indoor tractor" for house chores!! My next door neighbor has a 990 and likes it, I just wish he used it more to clean up.

I think all of those mentioned can get a lot of jobs done given some seat time.
