Mechanos, by the time I read your post I had already taken the pump off. I did take note of the timing marks on the outside of the pump, however, I did not mark the inside gear, as I figured it fits on the shaft of the IP pump with a key, and the teeth on the gear look to be cut symmetrical all the way around. When I get the pump rebuilt, do I install it matching up the old timing marks, or might the rebuild alter its timing?

As far as the solenoid, it does act as if the something is not opening, but I without opening up the pump there is nothing more I can do.

The pump will come back timed to No. 1. At least it should. If you did not take it off on no.1 then you will have a 50% chance of getting it right. If it will not run right when you put it back on then you have it 180* out as the injection pump turns half the speed of the engine.

Since you did not mark the gears, the only way you can be 100% sure everything is timed correctly is to pull the gear cover and line up all of the timing marks on all of the gears... there are five sets of marks and they must all line up at the same time.

Unfortunately, there is a bunch of other stuff that has to come off in order to pull the gear cover.

He has a 50% chance of getting it right the first time. Easier to try and see if he gets it first go and redue than it is to pull it all apart.

If he hasn't turned the engine since pulling the pump and if the IP gear has not been disturbed or moved a tooth or two relative to idler gear. I didn't say it was the only way... just the only way to be 100% sure.

The IP gear has not moved from its original position from when I removed the pump, so I should be okay. However, you mention aligning marks....there are white marks on the IP gear and the idler gear, but these marks do not align. I have included a picture of these marks....are these the marks you are talking about?

Those are the permanent marks... part of the set of five I referred to. They will not be lined up unless you positioned the engine at TDC on No. 1 before pulling the IP. That's why you add your own mark. If the gear has not moved, you'll be fine. Just turn the pump shaft so that the key aligns with the keyway in the gear when you put it back on. DO NOT turn or disturb the engine until you put the pump back on.

I don't know where I came up with "five sets of timing marks"... maybe because there are five gears in there. Guess the memory ain't what it used to be. Anyway, there are only 3 sets of timing marks.

So if I understand this correctly, when I get my pump back on and start cranking the engine, every second revolution and the timing marks should align between the IP pump gear and the idler gear? (And this I will be able to check through the inspection plate I currently have removed)

Mechanos, I read an older thread of yours about removing the injectors in your 955...I did manage to get mine out, but the brass seals are still stuck down in the head. Did you remove the brass seals and how did you do it? One of my seals is broken which caused the injector to be all gummed up, taking two days to get it out! Of course the other two injectors came out with my fingers. I will need to replace the brass seal in one port, and should probably do it in all three but was unsure of how easily or how they should come out. Again, you advice would be appreciated...sounds like I am doing your same project, just a couple of years later!

Well... not exactly the same. Mine was a complete tear down and rebuild. Not sure about the stuck seal as I didn't have that problem. All of the seals and tip protectors came out with my injectors.
