Hello, I recently brought home a 955 that has been sitting for a number of years. I went to try start it and it cranks over fine, but it is not getting fuel. It is getting fuel up to the injection pump, but nothing comes out of any of the three fuel lines on the top of the pump that lead to the injectors. The shut off solenoid seems to be opening like it should. Any suggestions? Can these injection pumps be taken apart and cleaned out? Thanks for any help.

Injector pumps have multiple small parts and fuel under high pressure. I would advise against trying to take it apart.

There is a possibility that the pump could just be air locked.

Chances are the fuel shutoff is stuck closed. Even though the solenoid may be functioning the shutoff can still be stuck closed. You may be able to remove the solenoid and work the mechanism to loosen it up. Doubt it will take much, usually just the fuel pressure will force it open.

Pull return hose(parts key #10) then crank engine and see if any fuel comes out of fitting where hose was removed.

I pulled the return hose off, and fuel does spit out of the pump when cranking. I don't think it is air locked, I have bled the system repeatedly. As far as the solenoid not opening, I have tapped the pump and worked the valve over and over to try free it up in case it may be stuck inside. I took the three lines off the top of the pump and sprayed wd-40 inside the pump.... I will let it soak for a while and try it again. Any other suggestions?

WD40 is not a good thing to use as it forms a sticky varnish when it drys. Just diesel will work. When you say you worked the valve do you mean the valve inside the IP?

I did not know that about WD40, but that is good to know. I thought it was the cure-all for everything. I have not worked the valve inside the IP because I have not wanted to open it up. I am thinking I will take the IP off and have my local shop test it and take it apart and clean/rebuild it if necessary. It seems to come off pretty easy except that I can't slide it out because the gear that turns the unit is held up in the housing. Any advice about what to do with the gear. I hate to take off the whole front cover of the engine to separate the gear from the IP shaft. There is an inspection plate that will allow me to take the nut off the end of the IP and hopefully slide the gear off, but it is not big enough to take the gear out of the housing. Has anyone tackled this problem before?

There are a lot of misconceptions about WD40. You should be able to remove the solenoid and move the mechanism from the hole where the solenoid fits.
Never mind my last suggestion. I see the solenoid works an external leaver. Other than removing the pump one other thing to try is to work the shut off lever back and forth while cranking the engine. Fuel pressure with the extra movement may loosen it up.

Hopefully you took note of the position of the timing marks on the IP and the gear cover mounting plate before loosing the 3 IP mounting nuts. Remove the 3 mounting nuts. Then remove the inspection plate on the front of the gear cover. Use a paint pen to place marks on the injection pump gear and idler gear to make sure everything is still in time when you put it back together. Now remove the nut and lock washer holding the IP gear to the IP shaft. Next, use a two jaw puller to remove the gear from the IP shaft. Instead of pull the gear, the gear will stay where it is and the puller will push IP shaft out of the gear. Once the gear pops loose, remove the IP from the rear of the gear cover mounting plate. Assemble in reverse order making sure all your paint marks line up and the IP timing tab lines up with the correct timing mark on the mounting plate.

How much fuel do you have in the tank? The more fuel in the tank the easier it will bleed. Fill the tank full and let it stand overnight. If you still can't get it to bleed, I would look closer at the solenoid.
