Hello....I have a John Deere 613 brush mower that has started leaking the gear oil out of the bottom of the gear box onto the blades......upon examining, I found some barb wire wrapped around the rubber seal, pretty well tearing it up....how difficult to replace the darn thing?

Not completely familiar with that particular unit but I would guess you will have to remove the gearbox from the unit to change the seal. Means removal of blade carrier etc.

I have a similar model - the 513. I just rebuilt my gearbox with new bearings and seals last year. I bought it used and water has gotten into the gear case from sitting. It also had a broken snap ring that threatened to allow one of the bearings to back out of the case and into the gears. Fortunately the ring and pinion were ok.

It's actually pretty easy to repair, but the hardest part is getting the giant bolt out that holds the blade carrier on. I don't remember the exact torque spec but it is extremely tight. You will need to block the blade carrier through the hole in the top of the deck and then use a 3/4" drive breaker bar to break the bolt loose. I had to have a helper hold the bar blocking the blade carrier and I needed a 4' piece of pipe on the breaker bar in order to break it free.

While you are at it, it would be a good idea to take the 4 bolts off the top and look inside the gear case. If any water has gotten inside, or you see any broken snap rings, now is your chance to disassemble and repair. Some of the bearings need a bearing splitter along with a press to be removed.

Hope that helps,
Michael
