Tractor
John Deere 5103
Hey guys first post here, but have been on here several times the last few weeks reading related topics to help fix me issue but still wasn't able to solve it. So here it is.

Tractor is a 2005 John Deere 5103 with right over 600 hrs.

Parked the tractor about month ago. Everything was running good as far as I could tell. Go in to crank it the other day and it will not start. Battery was a touch weak so I changed the battery and still it just cranks and cranks but cannot get it start. I have checked the following: Getting good fuel flow out of the tank, fuel filter is fine (changed it around 50 hours ago), the electric fuel shutoff fuse is not blown and I can hear the fuel injector solenoid click when I turn the key, so I'm assuming the temp sensor is good and not causing the issue, Fuel lines appear good and I cannot find any leaks, I am getting some combustion as I am getting some white smoke out of the stack when cranking (nothing crazy just a little smoke). I'm guessing I have air in the lines somewhere but I have bled off the system 3 times and still nothing. This afternoon my plan is to crack the lines right about the injectors and crank to see if I am getting any fuel out at the injectors. Does anyone else have any other ideas of things to look at or have an idea of what might be causing my issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't mention anything about glow plugs. With the weather getting cooler having functional glow plugs and using them to pre warm the cylinders a bit can make all the difference.

Thanks for the reply sir. However, I don't believe I have glow plugs on the tractor. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Also I live in Texas so while our weather has been cooler, the days I've been working on and trying to crank the tractor its been in the 80's.

Although you charged the battery the problem could still be electrical. Clean the battery terminals well and the cable connectors, too. Follow the ground lead to the frame and clean that connection as well. If those connections are dirty even a jump from another vehicle may not help. You could have the battery load tested as well. You may just not be spinning the engine over fast enough.

Possibly park/neutral switch? Is the tractor an E series?

Battery is brand new out it on Saturday and it checked out good. Figured out my issue but not sure what痴 causing it. I知 not getting any fuel out out of my injector pump. There appears to be a solenoid on the bottom of the pump and I知 not getting any power to it. I can hear a click on top which I believe is the fuel shut off solenoid, but nothing on bottom. Solenoid on bottom checks good as well but no power. Again cold temp sensor checks good and not blowing fuel shutoff fuse. Any ideas why I知 not getting power to lower solenoid? I don稚 see any wires chewed or frayed if that helps.

It痴 not an E series, and I don稚 believe it would be a switch unless it runs to my injector pump which it very well could. Tractor turns over and is trying to fire. Just no fuel.

I agree that the 2.9L engine in 5103 has no glow plugs. My guess is fuel solenoid on IP isn't allowing fuel flow to injectors. I suggest to check voltage on IP solenoid supply wire when ign switch is in run position..

So top solenoid which is Fuel cut off solenoid has power and I hear the click when key is on. However there seems to be another solenoid on the bottom of the IP right under supply lines and it is not getting any power. I really can稚 find any info on what this is or why it wouldn稚 have power. Any idea what the bottom solenoid is?

My guess is one solenoid is to "pull in" to allow fuel flow & other solenoid is "hold in" to maintain IP fuel flow to injectors OR 1 of the solenoid you're referring to is for "cold start" circuit. Did you check for any blown fuses?? I suggest you acquire/study a JD 5103 tech manual. My knowledge of JD tractors built after '87 when I ceased serving as a JD dealer SM is limited
